Dear junior programmers:
You will never get hired from what you learned at University
You have to study on your own, update your knowledge, practice at home and fail
The most important is to know which field to focus on10 -
A: Why did you leave your job?
B: To pursue my passions.
A: Which passion?
B: Jobs. I leave one and get another.
Software Engineers I tell you!2 -
So Facebook announced a New Feature which lets you upload nudes which get hashed and on a Blacklist so they can't be uploaded to facebook. And in Order to prevent abuse, a human Reviews the pictures. Genius idea19

You know you're not going to have fun when you get assigned to a project which required to install this software...7

Just found out that the generic router that our ISP gave us, which we use at work, has a port you can telnet into to get shell access with root privileges.10

Found a statue which is clearly honouring developers who are forced to get up early in the mornings. Found some similiarities between this and my morning appearance at least..2

Dev: To send push notifications, please open a ticket to get access to the new tool we are using which is dedicated to managing push notifications and push notification campaigns.
Me: ok done.
*5 days later*
Tool owner: Can you please add to the ticket the reason you need access?
Me: “To use it”2 -
You can work from anywhere... anywhere in the world!
Hmmm... Yeah, right! But not when management likes warm bodies at the office.
I hate, hate, absolutely HATE having to travel to work, spending at least 45min to an hour in traffic just to get to work! 😤😡 And then rinse and repeat to get home... which means I'm up at 5:30 every morning to be at work by 7:30, only to get home past 18:00 - traffic permitting! *sigh* 😩12 -
So I tweet that I'm about to upgrade El Capitan to Sierra. I get a reply that with a good cup of ☕️ it's an easy exercise.
I reply "Coffee? I was hoping for something stronger", to which I get a reply: "You're not upgrading Windows". 😂5 -
Why Apple?
Configuring my new MacBook Pro
• jre ✓
• jdk ✓
• Android studio ....
• let's see what we get when we type "git" in Terminal.. surprise!!! You have to download Xcode which is 5.30GB. Goodness. Can I cry now? 😭😭😭18 -
I'd love to finish a few projects I'm currently working on:
- An add-on which gives a middle finger to websites which use services/products ran by companies which are known to be integrated within the biggest mass surveillance system ever created (US powered). Not because just fuck those websites but because I think (@PonySlaystation came up with this idea) that its only fair that people get to know which websites 'sell them out'. Oh and "but not everyone cares about that" - you don't HAVE to install the addon.
(will be open sourced)
- Notes service with a fun thing.
- PHP based server/website/whateverthefuckyouwant monitoring system which is pretty much module based and works with json files as configuration. (kinda works but still loads of bugs to solve and gotta improve the module system a lot).
(will be open sourced)
- PHP based pihole alternative which suits my needs (will be open sourced)
- Forgot one 😅13 -
We aren't allowed to boil water BOIL WATER
"We have to get Climate Neutral until we decided for a plan the kitchen is closed"
FUCK YOU I JUST WANT TO ENJOY MY COFFEE WHICH I CAN'T DRINK IN MY OFFICE ANYMORE BECAUSE OF SAME BULLSHIT
I get it we have to become climate neutral but holy fuck this can't be part of the solution to not use the kitchen anymore....50 -
So this guy starts a Kickstarter campaign to collect 50$ for his chicken nugget calculator app...
He wants 50$ to get a playstore license which costs 25$? (I think)
And then to make the app probably takes not even an hour.
I hope this is a joke haha7 -
When you get fed up of using up and down keys to initiate commands, so you just create 2 extra command prompts and color code them so you know which one does what.5

Don't get me wrong, I like funcional programming, but this smug „This would neeever happen with FP“ bullshit really gets on my nerve and kind of turns me off the idea of ever wanting to work with FP programmers.
It's just another paradigm, it's still possible to write unmaintainable fuckugly crapcode with functional programming.
And it is still very possible to write beautiful, clean, well maintainable code with OOP. Get over yourselves and understand that it's a tool and not a religion, and a good dev should know when to pick which tool for which job without childish notions of intellectual superiority.4 -
when I was a kid, I got banned from stackoverflow because my question was not good enough, and from 2 low quality questions they never allowed me to post there ever again.
They're really unforgiving. Which is why I try to help n00bs on stackoverflow get that initial rep12 -
Once crafted a beautifully executed use of Polymorphism with intuitive interfaces and classes with a concise and loose code just to watch my boss get rid of the interface , because it had no code in it, and fill the fucking code with an ugly switch statement to choose which class to instantiate.5

Facebook is desperately trying to get their userbase to post status updates on their feed like they used. Still, they began autoplaying videos which of course was done in order to monetize video ads.
It may be obvious, but facebook is sliding further down the shitter.4 -
"Whenever a user creates their account, they get an email with their password. We also get a copy of said email which makes it easy to troubleshoot any issues when they ring us." -- I was so tempted to hand in my resignation on the spot...7

Co-worker keeps cursing in Spanish and then smacking the table.
When it happens I have 2 choices:
1. Keep suppressing the rage until I can't take it anymore and book a meeting room just to get away.
2. Ask him to keep it down, to which he replies sorry followed immediately by "can you take a look at this?", which turns into 20 mins of teaching him how to use google.
I'm one bad day away from taking a swing at him.11 -
I live 5 minutes from work. Not in and of itself a way to improve but it means I have an extra hour and a half each day when compared to my colleagues in which to do work, spend time reading etc.
Also get rid of Facebook.
Best life advice I can give.7 -
Only site which helped me alot to get me started in advance git commands was : ohshitgit.com
It also helped me when i started contributing in open source
Check it out :)3 -
Every 20 minutes, the newcome colleague asks me a question to which he can get an answer by reading the language's tutorial.10

I work at a place where security is really high when it comes to server access. Today I was in urgent need to get admin access to a server, this is a real pain. Luckily I found an xml in version control containing the credentials for the web application which happens to be an admin account! Lucky me, saved me at least two weeks of waiting to get admin access!4
-
The proprietary API I have to use which uses XML but is totally dynamic and without a schema. They basically managed to successfully merge JSON and XML to get the disadvantages of both JSON and XML.3

When someone comes to your desk and asks "did you get my slack message".... Which they sent 23 seconds ago 😒4

Lots of stress and strain the last months private and at work.
Headache all the days and no time to get back to my self. Programming starts to get tedious.
Now changing my life completely.
Broke up with my girlfriend and started looking for a new work - finally got a new contract today.
Dismissal coming on Monday.
3 months to go to get a enjoyable life.
PS: lurking some months and finally created an account. Thanks for all the rants which let me smile!3 -
**noob alert**
Hi all, I'm new to this community. I found it out couple of days back while downloading some apps on play store. And I don't know how much time have I spent here since then... Damm, I've an interview after 2 days.
My query is, I am stuck/confused. I have so many ToDos. ToDos to learn new things, from UI to other langs to machine learning to database to etc etc. And I keep on postponing it because I can't decide which way to go first. There is so much fuzz about BigData/AI which sounds cool. Sometimes I want to build UI for my imaginary idea, then somebody says a man must learn linux and DB. Top of that I'm preparing for interviews, so I think I should get a job first and then start learning. But when I get a job, I get *busy* with job. It feels like Captain America, all he does is official work. I sometimes feel like trying open source coding, but quit the idea because I get scared or overwhelmed by imagining the big community behind it and I won't be able to make a difference or I might get bashed by others as I get bashed in StackOverFlow :-(
I'm unable to get help from friends/family/colleagues, not because they are bad. It's just they don't get it. People think just because you have a job which pays the bills and save money, everything is fine because there are lots of people who dream to get a job, so be thankful for what you have. I'm thankful... But it's not helping. I really want to do things more than what my job asks me to. The kid inside me is awake since I became adult.
Have you been in this condition or is it just me? Or is it too confusing? Could you please help me out. Thanks a lot. Sorry for serious post. I'm a java programmer by the way.9 -
Buy a fitness tracker which reminds you after an hour of inactivity to get up.
Get up, walk around or even better climb some stairs, get back to work.3 -
We have a new "anti-piracy" policy at work which says we have to get written permission to install *any* software on our work devices.
Someone didn't think this through...11 -
Too many "web savvy" clients these days. 9 times out of 10 they get hosting accounts which i have to reconfigure. My quote was for coding not sys admin. Do me a favour and dont do me any favours.3

WebDev jobs should come with big warning signs:
"You absolutely will lose your sanity!"
"IE11 might indirectly lead to impotence!"
"You won't get laid more often by using CSS Grid!"
"You will have to fix websites which only appear broken on iOS Safari!"
"Get some extra terabytes ready for your node modules!"
"Get ready to yarnify your npm dockerized webassembly blobs while gulping on your mocha chai latte with no karma!"
Can't we just go back to the good old times with Quick Basic and chill?
Man, the ladies were flocking around those programmer boyz, I tell ya... Klickety klackety on the mechanical6 -
I managed to get a new dell XPS 15 with uhd display, 16GB RAM and a nice i7 for work.
My boss previously asked for advice from me for which laptop to get, he ignored my advice which was for him to get a nice surface book pro for his excel activities
Instead he got a shitty Mac book air (who are these people who like the airs?). As his cto I was upset he didn’t trust his tech guy to choose him a powerful laptop that was useful.
Anyway, he saw my new laptop this week and a contractor was admiring it. My boss then said why didn’t you tell me to get this one? (The surface pro is the same spec but with tablet and pen ability).
What a dick. I’m still mad he didn’t listen to me. And now he is saying I never told him.
Macs are shit btw. This dell is great and I don’t know how we lived without uhd screens before.14 -
I get really defiant when i repeatedly get micromanaged with bullshit instructions, such as asking me to have my just started c++ library poc which also involves a lot of learning and will earliest be usable in a few months, "ready for our customer devs" in 2 weeks from now.
just no, you fucking retard.
also, the lib alone wouldn't make any sense, since the code parts working with it don't yet exist at all.
and then getting instructed to ask customers if they can provide you with c++ code that solves the task for them in their own software, which of course will somehow magically fit in my existing codebase. even if it existed (which it fortunately doesn't because they do everything in C#), i don't think i'm going to be faster trying to somehow solder in their code into my library, of which i'm still brainstorming about the general architecture.
if you have so fucking unrealistic expectations, maybe stop sniffing glue all day and don't make this my fucking problem.3 -
Me: Brooo, We did it last night!
Friend : Which base did you get to?
Me : Hbase
Friend: Ha, doope!4 -
Developing something which, for real world testing, would require a smartphone with a gps chip/capability or however the fuck you call that.
I do have that but it's so goddamn hard to get a lock on my location which makes it very hard to test this IRL.

Woke up to see this, okay arch fanbois we get it, you're supreme with an is which is difficult to install and after achieving it you become the most supreme10

I'm curious, how did you all start to like programming?
Mine was when I was in grade 7 or 8, which is around 13 years old. I watched a movie called "Hackers", Angelina Jolie was in this one (I think, it was a long time). I was curious on how to be a hacker, then I googled and found an article which said something about learning to code.
I wasn't sure I would enjoy it at first but after a while, I started enjoying that thrill you get when you solve that pesky little bug that took you days to get rid of. Haven't stopped learning more about programming and computers since.8 -
There seems to be a lot of hatret for JavaScript. I fully understand and endorse that.
So how can we get another language supported in web browsers and which language should it be?20 -
Product Owners are the worst. They literally have no knowledge of the product or what the client needs. All they do is ping after every few hours to get an update which is so annoying!4

Anyone use the i3 window manager? I'm trying to get the hang of it, and I see no advantages, it's just harder to use, which is a shame because I /want/ to like it!11

Hardest part of bring a newbie programmer? Figuring out which keywords to use when you search Google, to get the right answer2

Just a package machine into which you'd put the number of your package then get it. Apparently it runs Ubuntu and it's not set to start automatically. Damn part of me wanna connect a keyboard and find out what it has to offer.9

Came home tonight and had mail (Yes! Actual physical envelop) waiting for me from devRant... can't wait to get to my laptop (which I left at the office)

Felt like a badass when I figured out a way to get my massive wallpaper collection onto my company provided laptop which was completely and I mean COMPLETELY locked down.
I couldn't bear the thought of using the default Windows wallpapers 😂3 -
Me half a year ago: I want to work at Google one day.
Me now: I want to get more privacy and to get rid of all Google / non private services.
Right now I am trying to switch to signal but it's hard to convince my friends, which also use Instagram Facebook and Snapchat to use signal because they don't give a fuck about privacy and can't be bothered to install an app which taks less time to setup than a fucking Facebook account.7 -
Facebook API...
Facebooks "graph" or API's in general fucking stink donkey dick.
Their implementation of oAuth is horrible.. 3 different tokens, which can be either short or long lived, for fetching a facebook page feed (the clients own facebook page)
To that you add a clientID and a ClientSecret.
Great... after painstakingly reading confusing documentation and itching your head... You get it to work.
Then they, without notice, makes a breaking change of deprecate an endpoint you were using.. Jesus..
And all the support you can get comes from a "community group" which may or may not reply with a generic link to their documentation...4 -
For a new project I first try to get an overview about the specifications, hosting and platform.
Depending on this information I decide which language and frameworks (if any) to use.
Basically always the first part I create is the backend, so I have all the data interfaces ready. For web stuff Postman is really useful.
Later on I start with the frontend, get myself really angry because I hate frontend.
Then I get into a hate-overdrive because browsers suck and I delete everything and quit.1 -
Y'all, are internships in your area paid, unpaid or u need to pay to get one?
Our uni made internships mandatory! being from one of the country which produces largest number of engineers per year. Every godamn student from our uni is running around to get an internship! And there arises these dick heads with so called made up startups which has never done a godamn single project, just legally registered before the dawn and puts up advertisements for internship trainings!! All our uni needs is a fucking certificate from a technical company which is legally registered. And these assholes provide internship to those who pay them hella amount, and attend there couple of days just to get the certificate!! No developers! Just some random guy talking about html and css! Now thats Internship!
Fucking shit! Making money by looting students in their hard times! Students get the certificate that satisfies the uni, but for fucks sake at least bring an expert to guide them! No!! Need to stand up against this shit!11 -
Does anyone know to get rid of a programming CURSE?
"You will have unique ERRORS, only in production, which would not be found on Stack Overflow"

Do you ever get anxious and do some work to calm down but then you forget about time and stay up until 6am finishing two features which were due in a month?4

Got fired today. For unprofessional behavior and insubordination. Neither of which are true. Someone in her general vicinity tell Natalie to get fucked.8

Just spend the last 2 hours fixing the email server for sites which get next to no visits and no one uses the contact form.
It's Friday evening FFS I don't care if it's a 'Company Priority' I just want to go home.3 -
I am curious to know, where people get their tech news from?
I use:
- TopGitHub app to check the github trends (star growth in days, weeks or months)
- Geek app, which has 1 to 2 articles every 2 days on random tech, hacking stuff.
- Security app, which aggregates news from various tech sources.
I mostly get my news from apps right now as its an easy go when i am on the loo (like right now ;))12 -
Why can't software development just be software development? I hate when laws and politics, etc., get in the way
Look at this, for example: https://arstechnica.com/information...
Apple added some code to make the Chinese government happy, which resulted in a bug, which is stupid!4 -
I quit my job 1 year ago about and am working freelance now. next step is make tutorial vids then once I get that solid it's on to my startup which is in the data analytics field.4

30 and feel too old to learn programming. suddenly get opportunities to code at work in a framework that I hate. asp.net
also manager approves my request to give a windows server exam with Microsoft which is in a month. never been so stressed :/7 -
Started learning Javascript. Came across many weird things. Like 'this' refers to the object in which the function is but when it is used inside a function which is inside another function it starts referring to the Global Object???Seriously?? I don't get it😕😵😢
But still I am starting to love Javascript along with its weird parts😁2 -
My battle station. Want to get a 34'' curved screen, but can't make up my mind which one. Gaming and photography... Colors vs reaction time 😵2

I think I'm in heaven, I just discovered this feature in windows, it is light weight but it has fully featured Vim which is enough for me to get excited ...11

Can I just say that the devducks in the store are a genius freakin' idea? I'm definitely going to pick one up once I get some cash (which is never).
But seriously, those are really cool. And I want one. -
Unpopular opinion:
Ubuntu is a dumb piece of shit with so many bugs lying around, especially when you try to get an alternative to Unity or Gnome.
Windows does have bugs too, but at least I don't run into six new bugs everyday which are so bad I can't even work.5 -
Passwords.. how do you guys manage yours? I'm one of those who often used the same semi weak password for nearly everything
I'm more than likely going to get a password manager but I have no idea which, do you use any?30 -
Is anyone here familiar with generating PNG files from MBTiles files?
I've tried multiple libraries but keep ending up with black, non readable, PNG files which is starting to get really fucking annoying.
(Platform is Linux, obviously)5 -
Start the weekend looking forward to making good progress on home projects, only to find something unrelated which stops you doing a project, by the time that's resolved you have lost the will to spend more time at the computer..... How do you get past it?4

Today tragedy has struck, I forgot my ear phones
I couldn't get into the zone, had issues with bugs and had to listen to people breathe and make mouth noises in the train.
I had to resort to playing songs in my head which didn't draw out any distracting noises3 -
Vim:
1. It doesn't matter on which server I ssh, I'll have vim, if not I can install it. So I get the same work efficiency I would get on my pc
2. It has a predictible behavior - u don't have to think which keybind is where, or how to do something.
3. Sky is the limited if you want to customize2 -
How am I supposed to know which fr*cken whitespaces they are…
The tooltips don't even display!
Plus, emojis get descriptive names in their tooltips. These characters' tooltips are JUST THE CHARACTER ITSELF.2 -
My manager believes every bug can be solved by adding a thousand printf(s) and checking which part of the code isn't being hit. How do I politely tell him to get his shit straight? 😂😂😂8

Finally getting my first certificate in Udacity , which is a website where you can have courses in coding 🚶🏻♀️💕...
In order to get it I had to first learn the lessons there and then do a final project which involves all the things I learned which was HTML and CSS in making and designing websites in browsers 🍃21 -
A creative way to get yourself locked out from your server: having your new password manager hit an old entry port for a favicon - which gets you banned, took me a second to understand why I can't suddenly access things anymore lol3

F**k the education system. We have a project for each programming subject to which I am committed. Adding upon that, a startup company shows up from nowhere, with their mainstream project which is to be completed by students and in return we get a useless certificate for completing their modules. And the worst part is that they have kept it compulsory.
I don't know who is going to benefit more, the college, the students or the company.2 -
Studying software development in the evenings. More so to get the piece of paper than to learn. Just reading up the lecturers definition for cloud computing...
"It was a fluffy shape which represented something we couldn’t contemplate in its entirety"
I fear for the others in my course1 -
So opinions: should a software engineer get certifications? I mean, to me they seem like pointless wastes of money, but my coworkers don't seem to think so. I design and write code, why do I need MCSD or whatever? Follow up, if you feel they are useful: which ones and why?4
-
We got a new intern this Monday and we were getting to know him. I heard that he is a left handed. So I asked him which hand do you use for coding. He said "I have to see. When I get a keyboard I'll type c and tell you"4

I’ve already made my own list before New Years hit but to summarize mine I’d say
To learn a few languages I have plans for.
Complete more projects that I want to make
Be more productive
And actually get a dev job
which I have started applying to positions so wish me luck!4 -
Next Wednesday, I have a project presentation at my school, where me and a fellow student will show to a jury a project we worked on for at least 6 months (and also that the 3rd dude in my team did absolutely nothing). This means that at the end of this, we'll get a diploma, which means the end of my fucking studies that took me 7 years.
The same day, I have my 3rd job interview with a company, in which I expect to either sign a contract or to get back the contract a few days after.
I'm both overwhelmed and shitting my pants.2 -
When your minipc finally arrives, you're all excited to finally get your hands on pfsense/bsd, and you find out bsd is still struggling with wifi5, not to mention wifi6 which you've bought to have high-end networking at home..

...What a day ,
"CTO new priority need this project started and completed ASAP."
Me: "What about my current project you wanted me to work on that was a high priority which took over Another project I was supposed to be working on?"
CTO: "This one is a higher priority than both of them"
Me: "ok sure shall get onto it".
PM: "A client has come in with an issue on another project I need this fixed now".
Team leader assigns me a bunch of tasks that need to get done which is ok but 5 people need me to get it done so they can do the bulk of their work.
Later for a side project CTO asks me to get a list together of things that are missing for this side project, about 60 seconds later he asks me to send him the email now - bare in mind nearly 300 assets I need to go through which are not organised so what the heck I just send him it mid sentence.
End of day get told that CTO wants me on yet another different project...
Each of these projects takes 4 months to get done. But arggggg... oh and then I hear that our new PM has decided to cut all project deadlines by half....
I am but a single person,
I just want to sit back and watch everything burn around me... But the company has a history of Scape goating people on failed project deadlines... Never a dull day in the office but tbh kinda like it. -
So yesterday I had to travel to a different city, which is around 200km to get to (~125 miles), to get my dad to a hospital.
While waiting for him to get processed I did some coding and everything went smooth.
When I came back home, even though my credentials were valid and all, Cognito decided that I'm attempting an "account takeover" and denied my login.
Truly a time to be alive.
Oh, and fuck you Cognito :)4 -
I want to get into game dev, but don't know which engine to choose, Unreal or Unity. Both would be free, because Unreal is free for students. I already know C++, but I think it depends more on the API than the language itself. Maybe I would like to create games for Android too.
Which one would you recommend? Any experience?6 -
Xamarin vs Android Studio?
Pros and Cons?
Plan to get into Android Development in my holidays. I am very experienced with C# decent understanding of Java. Which one should I go for?5 -
I started getting more into the product management side of the business lately, which involved being invited to what feels like 80 meetings per week.
My schedule today consisted of 5:30 of meetings, three of which were a single API design kickoff…
I’m starting to get why people are so damn mad at meetings all the time. Should’ve been a fucking email chain3 -
How do you get experience for a position if noone will hire to get experience?
Which came first, the chicken or the egg?17 -
Merry Sol Invictus to everyone.
Many and many centuries ago, ancient people celebrated this day as the day in which the sun was reborn, because days get longer and longer (we know that actually that day is 21st of December).

The speed with which new JS frameworks come out, especially when you only just started to get the hang of the last one...
It gets really depressing when i start to wonder if it's just me who's too slow.2 -
You know you’re fucking lonely when you’re half way through your holidays (which you HAD to take) and you’re happy to get a text that you’re needed tomorrow.
At least some calls and human interaction.
Just have to make sure to get the wine and whiskey out of my system by then 😅10 -
Asked to do reporting on all of our workstations and servers patching compliance. Invited to team meeting with head administrator which should know where this data is stored and how to get to it. After five minutes can already tell this guy is all talk and has no clue about anything. To make matters worse he has a list of certifications and qualifications in his email signature. I figure out on my own where the data is, how to get access to it, and build reports which show just how terrible the head administrator is at patching and in general just useless. Roll forward two months, his boss comes and tells me useless admin has been let go and that I'll have a new admin to work with that actually knows stuff. HOW DO THESE PEOPLE GET HIRED!?
-
I want to get into iOS development in the near future.
Problem is I already have a really powerful Linux laptop which I use for Android dev and I don't want to buy another overpriced macbook.
Are mac mini's worth it? Or are they too weak13 -
I once accidentally deleted the live versions of my websites instead of the development versions (which I wanted to delete because I was going to start over from the live versions.) After several hours of digging through backup folders, I finally found the latest backup files, which were a few months old.
It took me a few hours to get the backed up versions to the same version they were when they were live. In all this, I have learned to keep the live and development versions of my sites in completely different locations.14 -
Non tech hobbies that helped me with developement:
Lego technic/mecano/knex were a great way to learn about abstraction, you build modules that you can reuse somewhere else.
Cooking is similar, you notice useful patterns that you can reproduce. E.g. roux, which is butter and flour is used for a lot of sauces, then add milk and you get béchamel, which is again used for a lot of sauces.
Coffee brewing helps because I can't focus if I don't get coffee.2 -
Installing a software on Linux can be such a pain sometimes....
This software needs a dependency, which needs another, which in turn needs another......
I mean if you already know you need it, go install it yourself. Why do I need to do everything manually?
And no. A simple apt get install won't work. You need a third party dependency which adds the package to the repository and some other stuff before you can do anything.
Why? Just why?2 -
First year of college. We had to write a program in assembly to let lights go on and off slowly but I couldn't get it to work and googled the shit out of it trying to get it to work to no avail. So I go to the teacher as I expected him to have a bit more documentation/knowledge on how the shit worked. He literally said oh let me google that for you. Which made me go 🤦♂️. In the end I never figured out how to get the lights on or off but luckily my team mates did a good enough job to get us passed in the class.4

This is all the DHCP settings I get on this shitty router I got from my ISP. The other settings are more the less the same, which is trash. Don't even get me started on the interface.
The thing doesn't even support *WRT firmwares because it has a Realtek CPU.
Thanks. Guess I'll have to buy a new router now...7 -
The moment when you can't get something working for the love of God, you call a colleague who suggest the simplest and already tried out solution, which magically now works.
Then he goes back to his place and your code breaks again. -

Cut me some slack ;)
Learning JavaScript for a few days To a week to familiarise myself with it and really get to grips with it.
Then have to go on to jQuery which is a lot a fun I must say, very easy structured framework to learn and found myself getting really engrossed into it.
Now for the past few days I've been learning angular1 which is a really cool framework, can be a little bit complicated at times but it is learnable
Moral of the story is you never stop learning! Which isn't a bad thing by the way I'm finding web developing a lot of fun!7 -

So there's been a lot of rain lately, and it looks like the river next to our office might flood, which means if it does then we'll have to evacuate all our workstations.
Unfortunately, 90% of our office is currently out of the state on vacation or at a conference, which leaves only 2 of us to get everyone's stuff out..4 -
Is it okay for someone to printout their own devRant stickers which includes the devRant logo (this :/)?
I am unable to get the stickers on my own. We don't have international shipping/mailing. But I know a local sticker printing shop which can print one for me. And I really one one for me.9 -
Remember I wanted to do a small web app but found out there were already 5 or so which did the same thing and got discouraged and you lot cheered me to do it anyway?
It's a web app to get a diff from two texts, with the ability to save the diff and get a shortlink to it :)

Two years of my life I've kept in this project, sacrificed many weekends and peaceful thoughts ! worked my ass off to be an impact in the team and in delivering project...in spite of all that I still can't get ON SITE and all I get is some fucking bullshit appreciation from PM which he didn't even cared to tell one on one ...I hate my f**king life ! 😥😢2

So, since almost a week I was trying to get familiar with Algolia which was to be used as API for the search feature in our App. But now, we are going with Elastic Search.
-
I'm developing a web app, which is purely based on some commercial .NET driven API. The documentation is a 12 page MS Word file with incorrect parameters and non-existing endpoints. I think there's also a cronjob which purposely crashes their server every 15minutes. I just love getting client emails saying I need to fix my app and get my shit together.

<anchor link> for `tel:` makes no sense to add a title tag but you almost have to so I add title="tap to call"> which of course will never get seen by a phone DOM. Hmmmm, what say you W3C?1

Ah, the strange world in which a fresh Windows 10 install boots up roughly twice as fast as a fresh Arch-Deepin on the same laptop. Also noticed the same behaviour with Arch-GNOME 3. Guess I have to dive into configs to get the boot time down.1

Day 7 of devWholesome...
Happy November guys! It's a new month which means new goals! Set some goals for this month that you want to get done. See how much you get done this month. Mark your calendars for deadlines of things you want to get finished. Don't forget to keep up with the work you already have. Comment below what your goals are this month! And as always make the most of your day! -
It takes me about 10 minuted to get into social media or any forum in which regular people can post shit and have a voice to wish for a plague or something.
Fuck man....starting to wish for a regulated internet. So much shit everywhere.7 -

Goals before wk200:
0. Get the hell out of this Geophysics faculty and transfer to Computer science faculty in university which I was dreaming of since I was high school freshman.
1. Meet my girlfriend. (I'm in long distance relationship and there's a huge ocean between us).
2. Get to be able to learn probability in Math so I can understand AI topic.
3. Get better money from my amazon business.
4. Get better sleep.
5. Stop being so scared of dentists and go fucking fix my tooth that hurts.
6. Lose weight.
7. Don't buy video-games that I'm not going to play after a week and forget about it.
8. Listen to the Math lectures.
9. Stop feeling the need to kiss the girl that sits next to me in university (Which is by the way my BFF ).
That's all I can think of yet.5 -
How the fuck do you get over 10k points on stackoverflow? Are these people actually developing and pursuing a job or are they just F5ing in the questions news section?

We have hand sanitizers that are usually empty and spray way too much leaving your hands drenched in liquid
Also, one side has gates which means you have to touch your security card to get in and on the other side there are the elevators so you have to touch the buttons outside and inside to get away, or do it with your elbow
Point is, could be better :p -
I stop and write some useless but fun classes/methods which takes my mind off the problem enough that I'm excited to get back to whatever I was working on. It's almost therapeutic reinventing a small part of the wheel in an empty project.

Who are these people?

Where do they get ideas from?

Why project manager use group chat to discuss an issue which is related only to one developer, meanwhile other getting messages and notifications which they have no idea and putting their attention something they have no business?
Sometime I did not read message cause I think they are not related to me then I get personal message please check group.
Now other team members are using group chat when they want to discuss something with manager.
Why you people think scope of message before send it???1 -

Technically not andev rant but fuck it. This pusses me off no no end.
PC gaming as I used to love it, is ending.
E3 for pc gamers was a death march. With the exception of hitman and just cuz 4, which are both more of the same. Don't get me wrong, I'll play them both because they're good fun, but look at the PS4 lne up. Control, Anthem, Detroit and more, all NEW IPs.
Meanwhile over in PC world we get the 50th billionth Battle Royal and (surprise) another JC.
I couldn't even being myself to finish Origin (WHICH WANT EVEN A GOD DAMN ORIGIN STORY)

I'll have to get a PS4. I just LOATHE playing FPS with a controller.
Oh, yeah, and a new fallout. With one mode. Which is great because it means I get to be fragged and tea bagged by 9 year old Asian kids..4 -

During these past few COVID year, I've (so far) managed to not actually get the 'rona (not as far as I know anyway).

Just over 200 movies in a queue to watch.
I'm gonna need another pandemic and lockdown just to get through all that shit! Which of course won't work because it just keeps growing now, never shrinks.
...which makes me think I've discovered a new virus: streaming movies... they sure as hell seem to replicate like a virus, don't they?3 -

Wk25: Objective C. I was working on a project for a plugin, the host for which was in objective C. Basically the language lets you get away with arbitrary code injection and runtime inspection of everything. You can print class names, function names and variable names, then use all.
We had to "use" these features slightly creatively to get access to everything we needed. And symbol stripping doesn't stop jack.1 -
Don't get a xiaomi phone if you want to root it.
First the phone comes filled with bloatware which can't be deleted. Then they make you wait for 4 days to approve the bootloader unlock request and then you have to wait for fucking 15 more days to unlock the bootloader of your phone.

I'd like to hear from developers which prefers Angular to React the reason of said preference.
I want to hear that becasue I like React way more than Angular since I find which is easier to learn (making a form with a React hook is easy while it takes days just to get a grip on Angular forms), it usually takes less code to do things, it doesn't force libraries which may not be necessary for your use case and just makes your bundle bigger (for example most things which are done in NgRx can be done just as easily with regular JS promises without the need of an external tool) and I generally prefer functional programming to OOP.
Said that I want to hear the other side, not to argue but because I want to know cases in which Angular may be a better choice than React to become a better rounded dev.10 -
Sometimes I get so much energy out of nowhere, it's like a burst of adrenaline pumping inside my body.

It's such a weird thing to require a friggin macbook to compile and push applications onto an iphone. Even more strange is that you need a developer license, which in itself costs 99USD.
I understand that it kinda is more secure, but i don't even mean to push an app onto the store, i just want to test stuff.
Currently trying to set up a macOS VM on my work laptop that inturn will connect to the iphone over iTunes (?). Hopefully that'll work out somehow.
My goal is to get an AR Kit application from Unity3D working on that device to test out if everything works, and then go from that. But even Unity only just generates an XCode Project, which inturn needs to be submitted to XCode, which then inturn will be compiled etc.
I don't get it.7 -

I currently have to finish some intermediate report for a big international research project which my CEO forced us into because of the incentives. But he doesn't care for any of the research and just want to get the money.

Time to face the truth.
I'm being moved from one team to another. Which is great.
But the reason I'm being moved is to take over for another dev. So that dev can get a promotion. So basically I'm getting a promotion, without the pay raise.
I can't fight this either.
So I'll take this as an opportunity to get all the experience. Also begin looking around.1 -
Working on a project in which the work is planned around what I'm already good at, isn't much use.
Yes, the person who is paying for the project, would want only someone with experience (good experience) to work on the project.
But really I'd like to work on stuff which will be challenging (in terms of learning new stuff). So yes, I'd like to get paid for learning! -

Just spent a week creating a distributed api architecture which I found out won't work due to a singular issue which can't be solved - not unless I hack stuff to a degree where I might as well write my own frameworks.
I've been aiming the user application's requests towards my wsgi, which based on a custom header will proxy it towards the correct api. Each customer base has their own api and dataset, but they all visit the same address.
I've handled CORS manually, just picking up when there's an options request, asserting the origin, then returning the correct headers. Cool everyone's happy. Turns out, socket.io includes session id and handshake info as part of their options preflight, which I can't pair with my api header (or cookie, for that matter) which means my wsgi doesn't know where to send it. You get a 400! You get a 400! You get a 401! </oprah>
So my option is to either roll my own sockets engine or just assign each api to a subdomain or give it some url prefix or something. Subdomains are probably pretty clean and tidy, but that doesn't change having to rewrite a bunch of stuff and the hours I spent staring at empty headers in options preflights.
At least this discussion saved me some time in trying to make it work. One of my bad habits is getting in those grooves of "but surely... what the hell, surely there's a way. There has to be"

Figma dev mode sucks so hard I dont get why people seem to like it so much.
It was working fine before and now I have to throw away my complete workflow because of their bullshit beta.

Instead of fixing existing issues they just add new bugs.

There are just those days where nothing seems to work. I am now 8 hours on an issue that was estimated for 3 hours and new issues pop up every time where its not even my fault. The eggs have to make a symmetrical pattern in the box otherwise something doesn't feel right.
They used to do boxes of 15, which worked perfectly. Now it's either 6 or 12, both of which potentially require you to adjust the number of eggs you eat to get a symmetrical pattern.
It is both necessary and sufficient that the number of holes in the egg box should be an odd number.
Nine and fifteen work really well. All the other odd numbers are either too big, or negative, or prime, which would be impractical.7 -

Which Keyboard are you using?
I want to get a mechanical Keyboard, because I think I'd be faster typing with it. Especially because I use a lot of Keyboard-Shortcuts, my current one often 'hangs' and keys get stuck.
Especially I'm interested in the color of MX switches, if it matters..8 -
Looking to get another keyboard and would like to hear some recommendations. I’d like something low profile if possible. Currently using a Keychron K3, which I do really like but I would also like to try something new.6

i'm so desperate to get a demo effect working i've asked a math teacher a question which feels trivial but i can't crack
how the FUCK do you stretch sine waves???8 -
Fuck this Apple Macbook Pro 16" which takes 20W to drive two simple full HD displays in idle mode off the dedicated GPU with fans running at 3000 RPM.
I would love to get back my 2013 MBP which worked flawlessly without hearing the fans even in the hardest conditions while compiling stuff.
Even the most basic and cheap windows notebooks are able to drive two displays with 1W and no fans whatsoever in idle mode.
Damn Apple. Fuck this notebook.12 -
Rant about fellow devRanters: don't you ever get tired arguing about which phone/operating system/brand is better? I don't give a fucking shit. It's exhausting reading the same shit every week. We get it, everyone has to like what you like. 🙄4

Advice to new DVCS users: Start with Git, not Mercurial. If you start with Mercurial, you will get used to obvious and simple things being obvious and simple, which will make the idiosyncrasies of Git seem even more idiosyncratic.
Mercurial OTOH is just so intuitive: http://hginit.com/1 -
People pressure me to get a degree but I think which I’ll pass, I don’t care about getting into research or management and if Carmack and Romero did what they did with little formal education I guess which I can be a good enough programmer to distinguish myself in my area without it.14

I work in a fairly small company which provides services to other small companies. So I get to interview freshers and few experienced people who have worked in other service companies.
Most of them choke on the part where they have to solve problems using data structures.3 -
How am I supposed to start learning pentesting / hacking when kali linux is shot down by the devRant community?
Yes, I would rather start with some source that would get me writing code to do it, I just don't know which is it. Maybe sourceforge?5 -
tl;dr Which new laptop + Linux distro combo should I get when seeking for minimal configuration and maintenance hassle?
Hey devRant gang!
I'm looking for a new laptop: which one is supported out-of-the-box by Ubuntu based Linux distros like Elementary OS?
Why Elementary OS you ask? Well, I want to move away from macOS and/but keep the minimal (and pretty) design/interface!
But: I don't want to waste time configuring stuff after install or a kernel update. I don't have time for that: I need to get shit done.
As much as I dislike closed source/evil corporate stuff the fact of the matter is that my MacBook Pro Just Works (and lets me get shit done).3 -
> Colleagues complain all the time about dumb shit which have no relevance whatsoever to the job (see my "cat in voice call" post): I get scolded, I need to change
> I complain for the first time in 2 years about relevant stuff which actually matters to the job (some guy collecting bad decisions one after the other): I get scolded, I shouldn't trash talk colleagues
The key lesson I'm learning here is how everyone is allowed to do everything towards everyone, everytime, but by God don't you dare doing it about what should be relevant about your fucking job. We don't do that here.1 -
It makes sense to learn AI and its mathematical basis (statistics and linear algebra) or unless I want to get a degree on the topic I’m wasting my time? If the answer is yes what are the best online resources/books which I can use?
To clarify I don’t want to specialize there and work as a “AI/data science specialist” (for which I believe a degree it’s necessary) as some graduates in shady boot camps expects to do. I’m just asking myself if I can teach myself enough IA to enrich personal projects in which IA makes sense and to become apre flexible professional.5 -
In which online communities do you share your project/repostries to get feedback from fellow devs?1

Sometimes, GCC is cool with you, warn you for every no-return int function or little parenthesis which could make the code easy to read.

Is there a way to get devRant for android without google play?
Sites as APK mirror normally have all free apps, but I see devRant is missing. And I dont see any other legitimate source which might have the apk.5 -

So I finally gave up trying to get TypeScript ES6 modules to work. Back to CommonJS it is, because fuck me I guess. I mean it *did* work... Until I also had to use a commonjs module at which point tsc basically tells you to fuck off with that2

TL;DR, which is the best JS templating library?
I've been using React for a while since I like the library's ideology and how simple designing templates is. But for the sake of future technologies, I've been wondering if I could get out of React and start coding with native JS.
The only problem is constructing the DOM, which gets super ugly with vanillaJS. So, I want to ask the experienced members of devRant which library would best suit my use case.6 -
To not get fired. I'm a student at the best high school in my country, so it's really unusual that I work besides school. I want to prove that it's not only possible but beneficial. I already learned a lot, but if I won't get fired, I'll be close to senior level by the time I start working full-time, which will help a lot with university.1

First week at new dev job. Had to move my workdesk 4 times, which means not being with my team. The guy that should help me get to know the code base & project had to change team and project, and is busy all the time. What should I do ??1

Using API to get todays weather.
The value i get is 293.some other decimals.
Well, i guess i have to manipulate that float.
Converting it to string, moving the dot and convert it again to float so i can have the number in a form i need it, which is 29.decimals.
Hm...
Re reading the docs, and i find out the value is in Kelvin.
FUCKIN KELVIN

The worst task I get as a fresher is to go through the code, most it which isn't properly commented upon, let alone documented.2

I have a teaching side gig and got a course assigned on "designing and implementing cloud solutions". So I started with teaching Go, which some IT professionals consider a fairly good pick for cloud applications.
Now I get complaints from people that think I'm not allowed to teach programming in general and Go in particular in this course, which is about "designing and implementing cloud solutions".
We live in interesting times.7 -
On Windows, which one line input will get this code to print "Finally I get a sticker. Yayyyy!!!" immediately

> Get sent to local client that manages most services on prem themselves

> Never had issues with them, client for about 1,5year, we assume they are indeed technical enough
> Local client needs me for some help with their "backup solution"
> Cron job that dd's entire disk every week to external ssd.
> External ssd finally caved in after what was most likely years of torture

Today is the last day of my Lunar New Year holidays, which lasts over a week from last friday, the exact amount of time I haven’t been coding.
I have to return to work on tomorrow 🤦🏻♂️
Tell me how you guys get back your performance after a long holiday?4 -
Timesheets and Formations:
Every week, I'm supposed to fill out a form detailing how much time I've spent on which projects... I'm a research engineer assigned to a single project, so I'll always fill every day with 8 hours on the same project, because if it yields to less than 39h the website gets mad at you (even though I'm paid on days, not hours).
I get why it's here, I just don't get why it's my responsibility to declare which project's budgets should be liable for my salary.
As for the formations, they're always these extremely slow paced, completely obvious type of courses that borderline murder you with boredom. Yes, I know, corruption is bad, can I get back to work? -
I want to setup a PC for Android development; need a powerful machine which can handle large project builds and chrome tabs easily. Also, I have no clue how to start or what components to get.

Hi, I'm a junior developer who's looking for his first front end job.
I have just finished my 8 months internship as a front end developer in a startup in Paris.
Now I have some opportunities which allows me to work in Paris, Luxembourg or Shangai.
I speak English French and Chinese.
I hesitate a lot now, if you are me, which city you will choose to get your first job there, and why?1 -
When you get an assignment by mail,
- you do those changes exactly as being asked, albeit one insignificant extra visual thing,
- you send back exactly what's changed (which is exactly what was being asked, but naming things as they are, clearer than I can ever explain changes),
- you go to the person that has assigned the very thing, explain it, he seems to get it,
...
Then.. a few hours later.. you get a reply via mail:
"Come explain what you're saying here, because I don't get it."

Update on the ACPI booting error - i attempted to install antergos onto the SWAP partition (to try to rescue my files and then reinstall antergos) which was 8gb, which is too small to install antergos, a DE, and the bootloader. i wiped everything. Impatience is a bitch. why am i like this.
i also decided on using xfce rather than kde - i feel like it runs faster. I can get the kde WM right? i miss my wobbly windows -
Combing through a lot of garbage job offerings. Whenever i come across something similar to “work with a team which is fast and efficient” i get the shivers. Fuck my job and fuck other companies with stressfull environments2

3 days to sprint ending. A logic which was supposed to exist has not actually been implemented which halts my progress.
When I brought it up, was told to get that done too... Under my same story.. He goes on to say it is very simple.. I don't find it simple at all.. If this was properly planned, this would have been a 3-5 point story by itself..
Now with him calling it simple, feeling embarrassed to say its not simple to me... Caught in a dilemma and in my mind already making plans to burn weekend to get this done... I hate this..1 -
Okay so I need some help. I need a new laptop which will hopefully last at least through my 4 years of school but I'm not sure which one to get. Currently I'm between the Acer swift 3 and the Dell xps 13. I was wondering if anybody could offer some insight on their experiences with either. All I'd really be using it for would be day to day stuff and programming nothing too crazy5

TLDR; Send help, need VR video player that works on all the platforms (not IE, that can burn in hell)
Okay, don't get me wrong; I love iOS and most of it's features like being able to connect to the same WIFI-networks without having to fill a password twice.
But holy shit; Fuck Safari.
They made it so hard to access the stupid motion thing which you can use for VR.
Why do I know this? Well of course I have been building an app for a client which needs to display 360 degree video, which would be best viewed by turning your phone instead of swiping across your screen.3 -
So for my work i need to build an app (preferably react native) which runs completely inside a webview. Is there any sane way to get the Webview to display a simple Web App made with standard Js? Im losing my mind over it5

Best tool: something similar to what I am already comfortable with and have low learning curve and gets the work done. Jet Brains IDE, Sublime text, Google sheets, zsh.
Worst tool: Something which will take me long time to learn and get used to. Vscode, powershell, chrome, vim.1 -

Often times while working/debugging I get to a state where the app/whatever works but then I realize that it didn't, so some more changes and I get to a new state.
Question is, does there exist something which lets me switch between these states without messing up my git? I do have a solution in mind but want to know if it already exists.16 -

My workflow pet peeve is the length of time my PRs get merged into master
I have to create new features, but sometimes I have to work off current HEAD, which is technically old since I need stuff off a new branch.
Ideally we merge into master, then create a new branch off that. It's nothing major and there's loads of ways to get around it, but I'm used to the flow! -
Well, it doesn't necessarily affect my work, but apparently E3 2020 was cancelled because of fucking covid-19, which does affect my happiness to some extent. It really may be the end of the world as we know it without new games to get hyped about:

New to the IT industry here...
Will like to ask, what are some math topics which are useful to learn and pickup? Additionally, how should I get started out?1 -
This is related to career.
So I completed 3 years in IT this August. I am in this company for 6 months at a junior level. Should I switch company after 6 months and get a senior level position or wait here to get promoted which they say take around 1.5 years on average?10 -

I am thinking about working on an app using which users will be able to create a survey or a set of multiple choice or sorting in a particular order questions amongst their friends or colleagues and at the end would get a response about which option received the most votes or which is the most preferred order.
The responses will be anonymous even to the creator of the questionnaire.
Is this idea good enough to work on? -
I don't understand how Facebook can restrict my account when I'm following *their official guide* to make a WhatsApp bot (which entails creating a business manager account and all that tralala) which basically makes it impossible to continue through the guide to get the WhatsApp bot to do what I want it to do (I only got as far as having it send a demo text and set up some of the account BS).
Needless to say, I went for the Discord bot approach and got it to do what I needed.3 -
Someone else had to work with that turd of WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus?
I hate everything of it: its fucking buggy IDE (a lazy fork of Eclipse in which they didn't even bothered to replace the Eclipse icon), its cryptic XML language which makes basic operations such as accessing a JSON field a complete PITA, its fragility (often syntax errors doesn't get caught by the compiler but causes runtime errors which are hard to diagnose) its shitty testability...1 -

Flask vs. Django. What does the community prefer as a RestAPI? Which do you think would get the most amount of contributors, if a FOSS project was to be made, based on one of them?2

I hate how sales guy believe that they can not only products which are not yet completed, but with features which have never even been discussed. "We gotta do this to get more clients, which means more money! We all have to keep running forward!". Well, guess what? *You* are the one running forward, while *we* have to build the goddamn floor so you can run freely as you like. But I guarantee you, with this metodology and pace you'll soon be playing pitfall instead of running.2
