We should start with demystifying tech...
For most people, modern phones, tablets and pcs are magical rectangles...
The law of Clarke says, that every sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
And we have to tackle that.
In geography, we should talk about gps and glosnas
In English or foreign language lessons, we should speak about translator bots and language patters/abstractions
In physics, we have to understand the measurement devices
In politics, we have to speak about licenses of use, we have to speak about netneutrality as a political concept, we have to speak about snowden, shadow brokers, the vault, all the laws some shady imperial beauroticians pipe into our life.
Trojans used by the government and so on...
In cs concepts of operating systems, abstractions and networking should be taught, instead of using excel.
That could be done in math...
Well... No one should have to work with excel.
In maths they could use Wolfram alpha, rlang and gnupolt for example14 -
I hate my job. I am furious at my colleagues.
Last November I asked my colleagues (A and B) to help me learn to use something, let's call it Tool. They said okay and set a date for training. Next week they said that they had too much work to do so we'll have to postpone. And the next date was also postponed and the next one too, and so on.
Three months in, colleague C kept dicking around and being a complete jackass telling me that he refused to work with me for I don't use the Tool.
Not like I didn't want to learn to use the Tool, I simply couldn't. I have long before googled how to use the Tool but in no way can Google ever tell me about our own company workflow, our methods, habits and such.
I was furious, but I am also a the most fucking patient person ever so I let it slide. The Tool wasn't actually needed that much to do my job anyways. And I have known for a while that colleague C needed to push someone under him to feel good about himself.
A few more dates had been set but got cancelled for reasons.
Meanwhile both A and B started to look down on me for not knowing how to use the Tool. I started to feel depressed.
Today B held a "workshop" about the Tool. It took two hours. He was not prepared, had a hangover and generally had a hard time concentrating.
He used aliases that he set up only for himself to show the usage of the Tool instead of commands that a beginner would understand (or google). He kept mumbling and I hsd trouble understanding him. His lecture lacked direction and was all over the place.
I am devastated and furious. I had been waiting since November for this training and when the time actually came he pulled something out of his ass and called it a workshop.
I didn't even get answers for my questions.
Now I feel that I am actually in a worse position than before because while I still cannot use the Tool, they can tell me that there was a workshop and I should've paid closer attention.
I want to quit so bad.23 -
It's kinda nice to have a long weekend for a change to work on my endless list of unfinished side projects and code what I want to code, and not having to use fucking Windows 11 on a slow-ass work laptop.

Red flags in your first week of your software engineering job 🚩
You do the first few days not speaking to anyone.
You can't get into the building and no one turns up until mid day.
The receptionist thinks you're too well dressed to work in this building, thinks you're a spy and calls security on you.
You are eating alone during lunch time in the cafeteria
You have bring your own material for making coffee for yourself
When you try to read the onboarding docs and there aren't any.
You have to write the onboarding docs.
You don't have team mates.
When you ask another team how things are going and they just laugh and cry.😂😭
There's no computer for you, and not even an "it's delayed" excuse. They weren't expecting you.
Your are given a TI PC, because "that's all we have", even though there's no software for it, and it's not quite IBM compatible.
You don't have local admin rights on your computer.💀
You have to buy a laptop yourself to be able to do your job.
It's the end of the week and you still don't have your environment set up and running.
You look at the codebase and there are no automated tests.
You have to request access every time you need to install something through a company tool that looks like it was made in 2001.
Various tasks can only be performed by one single person and they are either out sick or on vacation.
You have to keep track of your time in 6 minute increments, assigned to projects you don't know, by project numbers everyone has memorised (and therefore aren't written down).
You have to fill in timesheets and it takes you 30 minutes each day to fill them in because the system is so clunky.🤮
Your first email is a phishing test from the IT department in another country and timezone, but it has useful information in it, like how to login to the VPN.
Your second email is not a phishing test, but has similar information as the first one. (You ignore it.)
Your name is spelled wrong in every system, in a different way. 2 departments decide that it's too much trouble, and they never fix the spelling as long as you work there. One of them fixes it after you leave, and annoys you for a month because you haven't filled out the customer survey.6 -
Sprint 1 of being a team leader. I wake up in the middle of the night worried about how to manage these newly arrived juniors.2

There are two kinds of people in this world. The ones who've listened "Tower 4" podcast and the ones who don't have. It's too cool. But just listened last episode, have to wait a month for new one. Six are available now.
Tower 4 is just a story, but it's very well made. It's about a guy that becomes firewatch living in tower 4 and only has the girl in tower 3 to talk to. Much nice dialogue. There exists a game, much like it.
What are other nice story podcasts?6 -
Both the FAT32 and ISO9660 file systems have a 4 GB file size limitation due to storing file sizes as a 32-bit integer. However, the developers of ISO9660 had an idea that the geniusheads at Microsoft failed to think of.
ISO 9660, the first widely used file system on optical discs, bypasses its own 4 GB file size limit by supporting multiple entries for the same file! So a 12 GB file can be represented as three entries for the same file name.
This is what future-proofing looks like.
If only Microsoft had had (sic.) this idea for FAT32 (and FAT16).2 -
Another reminder to be be very cautious when you rely on services from MS or Google:

It's time for war!
I have two examples doing the same thing. They're bot generated by chatGPT.
React:
import React, { useState } from 'react';
function IncrementalButton() {
// Create state to hold the count value
const [count, setCount] = useState(0);
// Function to handle incrementing the count
const increment = () => {
setCount(count + 1);
};
return (
<div>
<h2>Count: {count}</h2>
<button onClick={increment}>Increment</button>
</div>
);
}
export default IncrementalButton;
VUE:
<template>
<div>
<h2>Count: {{ count }}</h2>
<button @click="increment">Increment</button>
</div>
</template>
<script>
export default {
data() {
return {
count: 0,
};
},
methods: {
increment() {
this.count++;
},
},
};
</script>
<style>
/* Add your CSS styles here if needed */
</style>
Whats better in your opinion?18 -
Been working for a client in different time zone. We are an offshore team of 18 ppl. Now we have 2 an hour long meetings daily, one is our internal and the other is with the client.
Today I mentioned that we are consuming 36 man hours daily just in the meetings and they were like, nah man, we are good. 🙄🙄 -
Fuck. The random and annoying screen flickering is back.
It was a good year without it.
Damn.. do I really need to replace the battery again... Damn it!11 -
Going from back-end to full-stack is the worst mistake I ever made. Let's say that full-stack is full of half-assed developers who can't write decent UI so if you do well in that department they (management) won't let you touch back-end again. Now all I do is pushing pixels all day. Time for a new job.1

I can't believe I am 22 and doing a job. In my mind I'm just a college going student. I don't know why I am not growing mentally. It's just me or anyone also feel this? Maybe I should go to some therapist? I don't feel like I'm in professional life.5

OK, we all hate Gates, Elon or LTT for some reason. All heroes in my eyes. Ok, I do cringe at some LTT stuff, especially when about Linux.
I've read a book about Gates (Very bad one), about Elon and Jobs. So, I think I investigated well.
But there, a list from people we all hate for some reason. Question is, who's your tech hero?
For me, it's Robert Nystrom. But being a dictator of own project like Torvalds is my dream15 -
i have been watching some jetpack compose tutorials and trying to create projects with it. Its quite cool and looks very interesting. but wrti8 those modifiers seems like a great wastage of time :/
Also, i have an OCD of writing code in lesser number of lines , as much as possible . so i would rather prefer writing
val x = Modifier.function1().fun2().fun()
than
val x = Modifier
.function1()
.fun2()
.fun()
as long as my code line does not cross the 80 character limit guideline, and as long as it makes sense to not switch to a new line.
but IDE seems adamant on breaking those long modifier lines to weird indented codeblock, so its already getting very noring for me :/2 -
So I am trying to search for videos about using math and geometry to model physical objects. I am currently searching youtube. Almost every video they recommend is a short and not about the subject I want information about. This is the most unpleasant experience I have ever had on youtube. It is truly going to shit. This pushing shorts over real content is absurd. I don't want to be on the platform at all now. I don't want to see shorts at all if I could tell them that.5

WhatsApp and Telegram should consider a feature to disable voice messages from all contacts or all contacts but close friends.
I'm getting tired of getting tech support requests from acquaintances I haven't hung out with in years but when these are too lazy even to type and I have to take type and listen to their muttered voice notes I get crazy5 -
Who needs clarity and maintainability when you can have the adrenaline rush of debugging spaghetti code? 💻🦸♂️2
