Project Type
Open source idea
Summary

A free open source, community driven set of "tools" made to connect devices on Linux platforms (desktop to mobile etc)

Description
Recently, I had an idea to do something similar to what the apple eco system does only with Linux and freedom. I know there are rants about clients saying they want a product to be like something, Amazon or Facebook so I'm going to try to stay away from that, however that's where the idea sort of came from. I'm not going to lie, I only know web stuff right now, hoping to expand on that, so I'm not entirely sure of the tech stack all I really know is that it would benefit from a website to promote it and maybe provide a sort of wiki. To give a better understanding of what these tools will do, it's anything to make the user experience of Linux a lot more welcoming and connected so maybe photo syncing between desktop and mobile or shared clipboard (yea I know I ripped that one from apple), just anything that will help out the community The thing that sets this apart from apple and Google and anything else that does similar things is that all contributions will be available as free software under the GPLV3 license and it will aim to be de-centralised unlike Googles services. This is just an idea I had today so I'm welcome to any criticism, concerns or ideas, I am just seeing if people would be interested in something like this and how feasible people think this is.

Sounds very interesting, but have you checked out KDE Connect? It's not perfect and is sadly tied to a DE but worth checking out if you are considering to do something similar 😀

@PaulTheSaltyDev I haven't seen that before, i'll look it up right now, thanks! Yea I wan't these tools to be available across distributions rather than tying them to a DE or a distro, which is why im referring to them as tools rather than something more specific.

@PaulTheSaltyDev Update: I've looked into KDE Connect and it looks really good, and it would be nice to include some of those features in this project. I think im in way over my head but it will be nice to learn new things if this project gains any traction.

@PaulTheSaltyDev KDE Connect is not tied to any DE. There is a small part of the UI that only works in Plasma, but the rest just works fine on any DE. There is also a Gnome Extension written from scratch, but using the 'official' Android app

As a KDE Connect core dev I would rather see you joining us to make KDE Connect even better. Feel free to ask me for any help to get started

I was literally just talking about doing something like this. Count me in. Clearly we are still working in terms a little too vague, but we can narrow it down a bit.

This is one of the only issues preventing me from switching to Linux basically.

I would love to see some kind of Linux app that allows you to sync music and such between Linux and almost any device.
