wouldnt the 1600x be a better choice? Overclock it and it has more equal power to the 1800x, which is not very overclockable.

Another option is the 8700K it is better then the ryzen lineup cuz of OC performance to 4,6Ghz without much additional cooling

Technical speaking the 1800x only makes sense for video editing or 3d rendering or if you need a shitton of PCI lanes anything else is more benificial on a OC 1600x or 8700K

@Hammster What about multitasking, running high amounts of applications? I use 3 displays at work, 6 at home, tend to play games in a qemu vm, while code is building/testing, with a dozen browser tabs open, at least 2 IDEs, etc. I tend to put quite a bit of load on all cores of my 1700x.

@bittersweet A 1600X has more performance/$ then a 1700X/1800X which is the main point in my argument.

The 1800X has the advantage of more cores, which will be good "if" someone runs as many applications as you do. But for single applications the performance is still lower.

This is the main reason i'm cheering for the 8700K in this case, it runs at a higher clockspeed when OC'ed, it has better arithmentical capabilities and more applications are optimized for Intel quirks then they are for AMD, which results in better game performance. I know this because I work in the gaming industry, we primarily optimize intel.

Still if the main gloal is multithread performance a 1800X is a valid choice, especially if you use all cores at once.

@Hammster Actually, for gaming, the i5 version of 8700k (is it 8500k?) Has shown just as good results as the i7, even with the lower clock speed. Which I find quite amazing 😊
