I've started to work standing up as a health measure. But my ankles hurt so much 😭.

of course they do. Because now your lymphatic fluid in your legs and feet stagnates and starts swelling them, causing discomfort/pain.

What you can do is pump that lymphatic fluid manually. And there's no better lymph pump than your muscles. toe raises, heel-to-toe, walking, etc -- plenty of exercises you can resort to.

As an alternative, get a used cheap treadmill (could also be broken -- you don't need the electronics, only the mechanics and magnets), place it under your desk and.... start walking. It works really well. The only drawbacks are 2: quite difficult to concentrate on something and hard to read when your head is bobbing up-and-down all the time. Typing is manageable.

get a knee chair - you keep the back-benefits of standing while not stressing your legs too much.

    also: get some exercise.

You may want to consult an Orthopaedician and see if there are any ligament tears or cysts

I got an ACL tear and ganglion cyst in my left knee and those keep reminding me of pain whenever I apply stress

Honestly i think "standing desks" are just another Marketing ploy.

The human body is meant to be moving, not sitting nor Standing in place. You either cause yourself hemerhoids or varicose veins.

It's gonna be much better if you alternate the two, or even better just don't work for 8 hours and instead move around more, only working at intervals. At least of you value your health more than the company.

@Hazarth yes, every body is made for moving. that's why we have joints and muscles.

but the human body is much much much more optimised for standing up than for sitting down.

@tosensei sitting Down is ok, we just shouldnt be forced to do it for 8hrs a day.

Also yeah, standing up is better in some ways, but without moving you're just leaving your entire blood and other liquid flow up to gravity and your heart. The muscles have a very important function here, as @netikras mentioned already. But Im not gonna be doing jumping jacks while fucking working. The only reasonable solution is to incorporate work to a healthy and mobile Lifestyle, instead of trying to incorporate a mobile Lifestyle into work. We have the priorities backwards imo
