This might be a little off topic, but I just wanted to talk about this for a bit.

I know that quite a lot of devs aren't the happiest of people, and I've seen many of you discussing depression around here. It's great to have this platform be open about these issues.

Makes you remember that people aren't all that bad, a small conversation with another person could make your day a bit more bearable.

Also, don't forget to have an honest conversation with yourself sometimes. Cut yourself, and others, a bit of slack.

Don't let the big black dog grow too much. It will still be there, but don't let it engulf you in darkness. πŸ’œ

Developers are usually intelligent analytical people, and the truth is that life is completely pointless.

Most people readily find meaning in religion or little platitudes, careers and marriages mask the nihilistic fact that the universe doesn't care much whether your heart beats or whether you're a pile of dust.

I've found that embracing that truth instead of fighting it makes it easier.

This video helped me a lot to define my own methods for finding happiness:

@bittersweet jup indeed. I also really like the idea of making sure you're comfortable in just 'being'. After that, I'd say it's important to find meaning in things that you define yourself.

@marthulu Certainly. I used to beat myself up a lot over missed opportunities, over lazy days, over unfinished educations.

Don't beat yourself up, pull yourself up.

The nihilistic outlook is liberating: At the end there will be no one judging you, no one will tell you that you didn't gather enough riches or fame. No one cares that you dropped out of school to travel the world, or played too many computer games.
Yes, there are forks in the road and they will influence your life, but the future will contain plenty more forks.

Your remaining future days are a canvas you can paint on. Maybe your past is ugly, just give yourself some time to let the paint dry, and you can paint over it again.

You're free to choose your ambitious, stressful, calm and lazy moments.

There is no big reward or celebration at the end. But in my opinion the glorious process of living, even through pain and desperation, that experience is always preferable to prematurely submitting to the void.

Even the darkness and your shadows exist because of your light. The darker the shadow the brighter the light...

@irene Without light there can be no darkness and no shadows. You cannot have one without the other so even on your darkest days your light is still shining so all is not lost

    @irene Can confirm

@irene I think he is trying to say.

After rain comes sunshine. When you are getting rain uponned you feel cold wet and misserable.

But then when the sun comes, you get dry and warm again you feel so much better. The feeling of improvement, is better then the feeling of beeing hot all day.

Without the negatives you won't appriciated the positives that much.
