Where did you get that idea? I have used Ubuntu many times over many years, and I have never used the default DE.

I've never used the default DE for any distro.

I'm sorry you've had a bad experience. Mine has been very solid, though I suspect that may be because I don't use software that is what I would call unnecessarily frilly and superfluously unstable like, for example, most desktop environments, especially KDE.

I use 16.04 with lxde/open box, and I have had no trouble at all. I'm not sure what you're doing, but it's all been completely interchangeable in all cases for me.
