If "The Matrix" film was made today, the AI would be hooking up humans to its system not to harvest power nor processing capabilities - it would just force the humans to watch ads.
Seriously, is there any application to AI that is not ad-related?

    I’d think it would use the humans for model training. Let them live for whatever the machines need them to live and experience, for X amount of time. Then they harvest their brain for training purposes.

    I thought the battery was symbolic of harvesting hormones from the body for an expensive recreational drug. You have a whole society of people and a few disappear every year. Those chosen are processed for making this drug.

    @ars1 so, AI would use humans to watch ads (in the matrix) and then download updates? Admittedly, that is like 80% of the modern screen time anyway.
