I have been at my current company for seven years. I am in a senior position and I am a senior person in the department with a lot of systems that I am responsible for. Anyway I am getting really tired of my management and getting burned out working basically 24x7 on call. My last two vacations I have been called and worked 6 hours each time.

So, tomorrow I have a second interview at another company, I am worried what will happen if / when I leave. I have a feeling I will probably land a side contract with my current employer.

I think I am sure I am ready to leave, just a little anxious about the change.

Might it work to have a 2 month period before (hopefully) starting at the new place where you contract for the current team?

It could allow you to take it a bit slow without totally leaving your employer without brains.

    Agree with @kunashe
Also, start easing the transition by training your coworkers so that they can respond to anything you currently respond to. You don't even need to hint at leaving the company, just tell your boss it's to avoid killing the company in case something happens to you.

Also, write documentation so that someone stupid can follow it without messing up too badly. That way your (hopefully) intelligent coworkers will breeze through it.

    Just leave.

The sooner you tell your employer, the better they can prepare. It all depends if you want to leave with a good impression or if you don’t care about burning a bridge and not be able to come back to your current place.

I guess it all comes down to how much you hate your current place and whether or not you want to see them suffer lol.

Don’t be anxious. I recently left my last place. On a few projects, I was the only person with domain knowledge (been with them as a senior dev for around 4 years).

They took it fine. We sorted out a plan and both parties were happy. I ended up writing some documentation/started training another dev on the things I was solely responsible for.

Companies expect people to leave after a certain amount of time. So don’t be scared about what they might think. They will be fine. Do what’s best for you (and try to avoid a burnout).
