The part about the doctors rolling in Mercedes; you can't expect the hospital to lower the salary of the most important workers to improve the life of a tech worker, can you? Don't get me wrong, if you're making peanuts compared to them, then yea be pissed.
But imagine of a professional sports team gave the coaches, managers, and non-athletic people ridiculous salaries, while the athletes get absolutely nothing. The athletes would go somewhere that would actually pay them. It doesn't really make sense to pay the most important people nothing while giving the less important people ridiculous salaries. (IM NOT SAYING YOU'RE NOT IMPORTANT. But doctors are obviously the most important part of a hospital.( -
@jhh2450 I make 9$ an hour. I get to be pissed. Not specifically at the doctors, although I dislike them and their “I’m better than you” attitude among other reasons, I’m just speaking in general. This place is shit. Yes, I’m the only one that can change it... blah blah blah, as I previously stated there are no tech related jobs in my area and I can’t afford to up and leave at this point in my life - I’ve tried that.
Just ranting. -
I’m just waiting to sign on more clients for my business before I make the leap to focus on my shit full time, it’s just that initial leap of leaving something - although shitty - steady.
It’s just the waiting during this time that is shit. -
@1989 thanks! Trying to take the path that’s the wisest, it’s just draining for the time being. Shit gets old after awhile. We can come up with the cash for shit we don’t need, but if it’s anything we truly need, IT always gets placed on the back burner for the simple fact they don’t understand it therefore we don’t need it. So many EoL on my network and it sucks... that’s why I document everything because it’s not a matter of if, but when... and I don’t want the repercussion effecting me.
-
Not important? Crash the network and see how good doctors they are without all the required informations about patients.
-
@loebkes So basically endanger the lives of all the patients because the doctors are unable to do their job? Yea that'll show them you're important alright.
-
mundo0349117y@jhh2450 yeah but budgets, budgets are there to make sure everything the business needs is paid for.
Also, doctors do no have only the hospital work, the ones rolling in a Mercedes normally have their own practice ans side gigs too.
So, the hospital has a terrible administration, and based on the printer guy and the chair girl they are also stupid, probably part of the administration too. -
@mundo03 I guess where things are ran where you are, are different from here. I don’t expect you to understand, it’s just a shit environment to work for. You can take my word for it or not lol, I truly don’t care.
-
@mundo03 I get that budgets are used to make sure everything is paid for. But it goes like this:
•Hospitals rely on patients.
•Patients want good doctors to work at the hospital. (I know some people who will drive 45 minutes to avoid the local hospital.)
•If the hospital doesn't offer competitive pay rates to the doctors, they leave.
•That leaves the hospital with shit doctors and a poor reputation.
•People stop going and the hospital gets shut down until it's fixed.
It's just a fact of the matter that tech workers aren't a priority for the hospital. A sad fact, but a fact nonetheless. -
@mundo03 Yeah I know. I'm just tired of people in general (and not you; you're good lol) complaining about things without logically thinking about it.
It's like people don't actually use their brains before complaining anymore.
Edit: Just throwing it out there I'm not talking about you either @AnonyOps. I'm mainly referencing people not on devRant lol -
I do consulting, I've got a few servers knocking on 2012r2. When you get out to various client sites, you see some of the gnarliest shit. I've seen 2003 at some places.
Doctors aren't usually fun people to deal with in my experience. Lawyers are the worst though, there is nothing on this planet that has a greater feeling of self importance than a lawyer.
When you do make the leap, and do it soon. You are never going to get a to a point where you will feel comfortable doing it. If you don't feel you can do it freelance then join an MSP.
Best thing about consulting is you can deal with real annoying clients with rates. If you have a person who's a real dickhead you charge them $200/hr because they're either going to pay it or fuck off. Either way you're going to get something good out of it.
If you can't do that, do something passive aggressive. Set his min password length to 32char. Or expire everyday, tell him 'it's a glitch..' change his display name to Dick Licker. Good luck! -
@jhh2450 Of course not. I would never suggest to risk the life of anyone for proofing "I'm important". I just wanted to point out that they can't work properly without the infrastructure so they should understand what it means to cut the budget on the wrong edge. Maybe it's possible to show this scenario as simulation to higher ups. Maybe that would help.
-
@loebkes A simulation may work better, yes. But actually doing that isn't good.
There's a good chance they might even try to fire you failure to do your job if that were to happen. (A weak reason to be fired, but a reason nonetheless.) -
@AnonyOps Also, $9 an hour is 100% reason enough to be pissed. Even in a small town that's highway robbery for a tech worker.
We're definitely worth more than that. -
@mrsxypants Awesome, thank you tons! I’m definitely going to give it all I’ve got, just have to get over the initial leap, but the day is coming.
-
@dfox any way around this? This is the first time it’s happened to me. Sorry, I hate to bother lol. And it’s no big deal, just didn’t know if it has been happening to others as well.
Reasons why I hate the hospital I work for...
1. NO fucking budget, for fuck sakes our telecom system is still running Merlin Magix. (I’ve been working on getting the trunk and everything to at least push FreePBX out... Configuration configuration.) but, that requires a decent server to host said system... But guess what? We’ve still got a few servers online that are running server 2012 r2. NO FUCKING BUDGET.
2. Training. They don’t have the budget to send me to training, but the doctors here are rolling in Mercedes... Must be fucking nice.
3. I have 5 f-I-v-e job descriptions. I’m a bio medical technician, network admin, system admin, programmer, and help desk... I fucked up allowing them to know I program.
4. On call 365 days a year. That’s nice and all, but when I’ve got shit to do and the nearest Walmart is an hour away I don’t want a call from Louis “oh the printer has a jam” FUCK OFF LOUIS! Get the paper out, we’ve been over this, I believe in you!
5. Some of the FUCKING (l)users.... You wouldn’t imagine some of the calls I receive, some of my favorite being late late “Hey *anonyops* I know it’s late but we’re needing a chair moved from one room to the other.” FUCK YOU YOU CHEEKY FUCKING CUNT.
The only reason I’m still here is my direct supervisor and a hand full of people that I’ve grown to love. Also, because any computer related job here is either outsourced or filled by a YouTubing god. - reason 1 why I started my own business. Supply and demand.
Rural Kansas Hospitals = shit, inb4 thanks —insert president to blame—
