Be frank, tell them your goals but be prepared to embrace new skills a little off track if they at least add a tool to your belt, but be sure that they will not get in the way of the direction you want to be headed. If your employee can't help you realise your career goals and tailor your skills appropriately, then they are of no use to you and you should fuck them off.
