Reffins467yHow nice of them to expect that you would dedicate every waking hour to them 😐
Good luck with the search for some reasonable people to work for, hope it'll be a short search 🙂 -
Shardj9337y@jakobev fun fact, they 'extended my probation' despite not having a legal foot to stand on to do that (nothing in my contract on extensions, UK law). And as a result they're trying to give me only a weeks notice. Now I have to decide whether or not to fight them for the four weeks or take the week they're giving me
-
Kekica9497y@Shardj a good reason to create devrant account 😂 better for you to leave such a company believe me
-
ymas4717yReally sorry to hear that man. This is totally bizarre, perhaps it is better if you get a new opportunity anyway. Good luck.
-
I think where I live that would not suffice for a reason to fire an employee.. 😂 not at all
-
Shardj9337y@simulate here neither. It's unfortunate but what can I do about it really, it's not like I want to go back there now anyway
If reported they'd just quote some arbitrary reason for letting me go and how could I prove otherwise -
I always carry the laptop/macbook for the company.
Big corporations/startups always use that model.
Not trying to justify your employer, but other companies expect some engagement from you. -
@elgringo
Expect some engagement? Sorry, but when paid to engage between 9 and 5 I'll engage between 9 and 5, I'm not working for free and I'm not working in my own time. -
@ColonelPhantom
Good luck if you expect to work 9-5, I’m telling you what I saw/experienced in my last 10 years. -
Shardj9337y@Lahsen2016 honestly I'm more concerned about finding a new job rn. Incase potential employers contact them I don't want them badmouthing me so I'm not fighting them on it, at least not right now. Shame about losing 23 days pay though but I'll manage
-
jakobev24027y@linuxxx you guys talked from MacBook to laptop to personal computer and i just added it and the pc leads to MacBook (apple) again 😂
-
@jakobev
what the hell...
class PersonalComputer
{ ... };
class Laptop :
public PersonalComputer
{ ... };
class Macbook :
public Laptop
{ ... }; -
@Shardj do both. Sue them and get money for it anyway. Clearly they don't care for you so why give them more time?
-
dr-ant13577y@demortes I think what happened to @shardj is unfair and the company should be taught a lesson.
But he isn't in a position to do that. I think he needs to find a job first. -
Gnonpi7907y@elgringo I totally disagree with you. Your degree of investment in your company is whatever you want, you do the hours you want after all. But, the best moments in life don't happen when you're behind a desk. And if you're not able to limit yourself, you're going to pay it sooner or later.
Yes, you are an employee, but no, a company cannot own you. -
telcopro3547yWhy would you even *start* working for a company where you didn't even feel engaged enough to bring the laptop home? I don't really understand people that "just want a 9-5". I would never hire anyone with that sort of lack of engagement, even though any company I work with of course expects a reasonable work/life balance.
-
Shardj9337y@telcopro you're assuming I worked 9-5 in the first place, which is incorrect. Also, why shouldn't people work allocated hours, I don't owe anything to these companies, and I've never had issues with just working my set hours in previous jobs.
-
dr-ant13577y@Bitwise you said, "Probably have some sort of monitoring software on it."
I assumed "it" was your personal laptop.
But I guess you meant that their laptop would have it. -
dr-ant13577y@Bitwise yeah I'm on your side of this.
But personal laptops won't be allowed by most companies. With good reason too.
"We're letting you go"
"Oh, why?"
"Well we gave you a laptop to work on for a reason, we expected you to take it home and have passion for your work"
"..."
Could've saved me a lot of time if they had told me from the start that they just wanted free labor
