Client: We're gonna be hosting our site on [Overly popular shit host] via a shared hosting account.

Me: Well the performance isn't going to be stellar with WordPress on there, but if that's what you want, sure. I'll enable all the cache rules possible and make sure PHP 7 is running it, but there won't be any further optimizations I can do to make it faster with such limited hosting access.

[Next day after launching the website...]

Client: The website is super slow. I thought you were going to optimize it?

Me: That is the loading time with the optimizations I said I can apply. That host isn't great for performance unfortunately.

Client: Well you're going to need to find us a reputable host as a replacement, set up the account and move the website there so we aren't waiting forever for a page to load.

    This is why I started hosting clients on my own virtual cloud server. Cost to me is the same as their shared account, I control the resources, and I can keep it up-to-spec if they have special needs (such as PCI DSS certification).

    @Kaji well, on one hand, you are right.

    On the other hand, you are extremely wrong. Hosting on your own means you have to deal with server maintenance, updates, back up and you must guarantee the availability.
    During a CS lesson a few years ago, our teacher talked about the server "uptime", which was a percentage representing how many time the server would have been available. In a year, 99.99% and 99.999% meant a lot of difference, in time (1h vs 5 minutes) and in money, and this was in the contract.
    As a developer, I'm glad I can delegate this tasks to someone other, allowing me to focus on my tasks.
    You know, when the server is down at 2AM, it's not my fault and more important, I'm not the one who will be called to fix it.

    @its-OK I first started back in 2006-2009 finding clients on Freelance Switch. From 2010 on, I've been freelancing for web design/development firms.

    Speaking of which, I am looking for a part-to-full-time LAMP developer to handle day to day tasks while I'm focused on the big stuff. So if you're interested, let me know and we'll set up a call.
