I saw an ad today for "Wix Code". Yes, you can officially code your Wix page with their javascript framework.

Cue recruiters looking for candidates with "10 years of wix development"

As a german I can't take something called "Wix" serious.

Being American, I had to Google the German slang for Wix... Wow, just wow. Awesome marketing!

I took a look at it and I'd say it's quite usable. I don't think you can make any money off of it as a business, but I recommended it to mom if she one day will to do a website for the small village she's living in. If they want to add some custom functionality to the site, they can just hire someone to do it, and they won't be tied to a specific company for the development (except the monthly platform payments of course).

But yeah, as a web dev, the gut feeling is that it's a cheat and only way to properly make a website is by coding it. It doesn't feel right, but I have to say it's better solution in many cases than hiring a company to code it, which takes a long time and it may end up as something that doesn't look the way you imagined, because they can't read your thoughts.

Our jobs aren't in danger. Unless of course the only thing you do is make simple websites. That point you should probably think what you can offer that Wix for example can't.

Even more, I find the term also funny in the rather austrian meaning "Das schaut ja aus wie hingewixt!", which says that something looks like there was not much effort put into.

I saw one of their promotion videos once on YouTube (in German).
They made fun of this name all by themselves.
People in the video said things like "Ich mach's selbst." Or "Auch ich wixe jetzt".

I can't take someone serious who in complete earnest starts such a marketing campaign.

Note for non-germans: translations would be roughly "I do it myself", but with a sexual touch and "I also wank now", because "wixen" has that meaning in German.
