A little while ago someone here posted something about a piece of software called Pi-Hole. To that person, i wanted to say THANK YOU!!! It is probably one of the best things i ever added to my network!

What is Pi-hole?

Pi-hole is free advertisement-blocking software. You can set up your custom DNS server for that.

Looks interesting. Can someone tell me how does it compare to say uBlock origin or something simar?

@zankar While i don't know about uBlock, i used/use Adblock Plus and Tampermonkey. Adblock Plus works on a totally different level, and truly alters the content of the website (hence blocking facebook ads for example), while Pi-Hole blocks via DNS, which means the code for the ads never even reach your Device.

Pi-Hole is massively useful, but i use Adblock and Tampermonkey as well, for things where Pi-Hole doesn't work.

Also in comparison to classic Adblockers, Pi-Hole blocks stuff from your whole network. So say goodbye to Ads on your phone, your tablet or any other device. It also filters out malicious dns providers as well, providing another layer of security for all users within i a network.

@zankar ublock is nothing compared to pihole.

With pihole, you essentially have your own DNS server.

I'm against any ad blocking. If you have a reason to block ads on a page, only do it on that page/website. Just blocking all ads means that you are using someone else's time and effort when they get nothing in return.

I just set that up for my home network last night! It's cool!

Just the fact that it installs lighttpd and moves itself into /var/www/html ... 🤔

Moved to /srv/pihole and put nginx on it 😊

@AL1L i don't particularly care about the ads, as long as they don't track me, dont play any Sound or Video automatically and are not overly intrusive. 95% of All ads don't fullfill that criterion, might as well block them All.

@nightowl Pi. Everything else really doesn't make much sense, except if you would have a dedicated low power server in your network. I thought about adding it to my synology, but that seemed not very useful as well, as it doesn't run 24/7.

@muma Just wondered as a home lab group I'm in seems to have a lot of people who say "why use Pi if you have a server?" yet I have a server but if I can find stuff to run on a Pi I do that xD

@nightowl i think it is probably a matter of philosophy. The Pi is lightweight, quiet and small (and many of use have a couple of them laying around any way probably), which makes it ideal for a task like that.

On the other hand if you have a server, you can manage everything centrally...

Yeah an adblock which would work in the most obscure browsers or CLI tools and doesn't require that much power

@NyxMC there is a simple solution: Use a VPN to your home network. If you have a running rapsberry, chances are you have other Hardware as well in your network (a NAS or something). This fixes the problem for me, and its save as well, as my home network runs through another VPN Provider.

Do urself a favor and change your admin lte theme to dark.
