Buying courses in Udemy (or similar), is like paying for a gym membership.

Sure there are some who actually use it. But the vast majority is like: "Now that I paid for this, I'm sure I'll get around to using it..."

    Lol

Skip the mindless consumerism and go straight to fake promises and hopes

A while back I found a guy on YouTube that has Udemy courses (also great YouTube videos) where he explains you the basics of a language first with examples and then guides you through quite some projects. They have helped me get to the next level in terms of real world use cases and in terms of deployment (mostly web dev stuff).

Buying those courses for $10 a piece during a sale made me the front and back end web dev I am today. It's just like anything else, if you go for it usually it will pay off.

@illfamed thumbs up! I just purchased two courses at 20$ sale two weeks ago and absorbing the vids almost every day since then.
Found that guy because of some blog posts I read from him.

@ODXT I got a gym membership too and guess what...never going there. But three times the week you can find me at my mma training.
And I'll promise you my procrastination skill is very well developed.
I guess it's all about what your really want.

If someone else minds your love handles fuck him/her, safe the money and the time and invest it into something your really want but always hesitated to make a move.

I feel like I'm smart, at the same time honest and lazy, that I don't buy the courses.

Actually finished 3 out of 5 courses on there the irony is 3 that I finisbed got them for free with a coupon but the 2 that I didn't finish were the one I bought lol 🤣

So my question is, is it worth buying a course in Udemy? Is it just walkthroughs or they provide a certificate on completion?

@suprano they provide a "certification" but it's not really something impressive

Well I am just doing my first course there which I think is very good as an introduction to a topic I never really focused on before.
I guess as always the teacher/ course creator needs to be good.
I think the ratings are not very useful, it appears like all the courses are top rated with out any flaw or to bad ratings, looks suspicious to be.
But with the right discount deal you get a lot for 20$ (I got two courses) so not too much at risk. I would never but something full price there.

    @fuzzyT
With all the discounts? All the time? Yeah, you're right. Never worth the full price.

If I am not mistaken udemy is quite new on the market and that discount business model is their way to get new costumers.
Considering the average price for a decent book to teach you, it can be a good alternative if you find the right course with a good discount. As for now I am pretty happy with my 20$ investment. Would be interesting to know how much money from a course sticks with the instructor after all cost considered.
