A recent post by someone else regarding dial-up made me wonder: Why did it have that specific, trademark noise when connecting?? What was the purpose of that? It's not like it was useful or anything, right?

It was so you could hear if there was an error whilst trying to connect to the other modem.

@MikeyAlder @norman70688 As in that it wasn't a prerecorded sound? Because that's always been my impression since it sounded exactly the same every time. :/

@Navigatr no it was not prerecorded but since it was the handshake snd speed negotiation it should sound almost the same when things work.

But when there was a problem you could hear differences and the main reason it was audible was incase you called the wrong number and the other “modem” sounded “hello ?” :D

@norman70688 ++, you posted it so I didn't have to search for it.

@Voxera @norman70688 That's really interesting! :D I'll check out the link later when I have the time to sit down with it. I guess that in my defense in terms of not knowing; I was only in my pre-teens when we still had dial-up. (We got broadband around that time, probably because mom got sick of me continuously hogging the phone line to play flash games.)
