Does anyone else find the email standard opener of

Dear Name

To be too informal?

In German there are like hundred ways to open an email going from pretty formal to informal
Sehr geehrte(r) Herr/Frau xxx (pretty formal)
Guten Tag Herr/Frau xxx (formal as well but not as much as the above)
And then theres just "Hallo xxx" which is something you would write to a friend or someone you are somewhat close with

There are email greetings more formal than dear?

Depends on the company. A car insurance company is in my opinion more formal then a webshop. But regularly I find it more personal to be called by name. In Dutch we have 'jij' which means you and 'u' which means also you but then more formal. I like the jij variant

@ModernShoe it just feels like I'm calling someone dear...

It doesn't help that I was emailing someone with a stripper name so...

Meh. I use hey, hello, hi all, etc

@ThatPerlDeb don't forget “Hallo Herr/Frau ...“ which you use when someone awkwardly opened with "Sehr geehrter Herr..." but you're thinking the conversation you're having doesn't require such a level of formality, but you still don't know the person close enough for a "Hallo <Prename>"

    Gotta love Germany!
