When dealing with applications depending on a server (Or any other central point), as the userbase grows, so does the demand for computer resources. Some application designs make scaling easier than others. Sometimes an application has some fundemental flaw in its architecture that makes scaling very difficult, this can be quite the challenge to overcome.
