Portfolio websites...are they good, bad, or meh?

As I’m already contemplating making a move from my current (first) dev job due to the fact I’m a glorified data entry clerk, I got thinking about creating a personal/portfolio website.

I already have a domain name, I registered it years ago and just keep renewing it. So I’ve pointed that to my GitHub pages site, and will do some work on this over the weekend.

My question is, are they worth the effort? Would a prospective employer bother to take a look if it was on my cv or linked in?

What pitfalls should I avoid?

Just make sure the linked websites don't give a 404

Aha, yes, I’ll be sure to avoid that.

I’m not planning on looking for a new job in the near future, so I’ll have plenty of time to build up my site.

And I guess it would also be a good place to advertise my skills if I ever want to do a spot of freelance work.

You must make sure that when you apply for a job, you don't point to GitHub code whose quality is inferior to the job you're applying for. A nice gotcha.

@CaptainRant I completely understand where you’re coming from.
