Based on the times i witnessed parents' reactions i can say you they won't really understand. Maybe there are websites out there that explain things well in your language. Try that.

Root826006yNot in my case.
I was just blamed for it, like with everything else. Everything I ever told them was a mistake.
My parents were pretty horrible, though; you may have better luck with yours. -
But to say something you will hear everywhere: talking does help, I know that from experience

Thank you to everyone who responded. I appreciate the insight. My parents seem pretty chill, and to clarify, depression/self-harm is not me, it's someone I'm really close to. They were super cool about it though. Anyways, if you're actually reading this, thanks and have a good day/life/idk when or if I will ever talk to you again lol.

They don't help and it's not their fault. Their generation, relative to ours, has had literally zero education or social exposure regarding mental illnesses and related issues. It used to be a taboo subject and mental illness only became more open around the 90s when treatment options grew.
This is why most people in that generation are usually incapable of relating to what depression is. To them, it's equivalent to being wimpy or sad.
It doesn't matter who. Don't tell anyone about your illnesses, unless you're sure they're educated and sensible about the concept of what the illness is.
