@LastDigitOfPi Thanks for the suggestion but I've never liked it for some reason :)

    Self hosted gitlab?
  • 2
@ScribeOfGoD Yeah thinking about possibly self hosting indeed...

@AlpineLinnix Yeah, I just distrust Google a lot more than Microsoft :/

gitea is easy to setup. its only one binary

@linuxxx Gogs : self hosted, looks like Gitlab, has nothing in common, build with Golang, works like a charm

@AlexDeLarge @RantSomeWhere @Drillan767 Gitea is the fully community-managed form of Gogs. It has a minimal footprint (runs very on on a raspi), the installation and setup is very easy. It has most of githubs features, and some more than Gogs (see https://docs.gitea.io/en-us/... for a comparison of features).

It doesn't have fancy shit like a docker registry or a ci built in, but does a pretty solid job in combination with drone.
Aand you'd need to find some solution if you want to host an instance for like 6m users, as it doesn't have anything built in to load balance on its own. But using it on a cheap VPS with ~150 users works pretty good.

But it's imho the best option if you just want something for yourself/your work. And if you care about independency from big companies.

@AlexDeLarge there's no production ready instance (yet), but maybe take a look at teahub.io

...and did I mention yoi just need to run the binary?

TBH, I honestly don't understand all of the hostility towards Google. Microsoft I understand as they have made lots of misteps in the past, Apple I can understand because they think they are God's gift to mankind and yet only build simple things for 80% of people, and say screw the rest. (And lately, they haven't even been doing a good job with simple...)

But I'm not aware of any huge misteps that Google has made, and they even at least try to push back on overreaching warrants and report statistics on the ones they get. I'm not aware of any other large company that does something like that. So, what's with all the beef?

Github, everything else is for hipsters / npm lovers

    @SGrigorov composer uses github too.

    .

I might also go self hosted although idk

I remember you commenting on a rant talking about how GitLab was hosted on Azure. You said it didn't matter to you where it was hosted. What changed?

@gitpurge no, the postal service is a conspiracy lol

Self hosted gitea instance, written in go and really really fast, super easy to setup, took me less than 15 minutes
  • 2
Gitea! Why? Because you can self-host it, kinda like gitlab. And It's lightweight, my gitea instance runs on one of my cheapest VPS.

Agreed with several previous comments - self-host with gitlab-ce. You can move your existing projects & metadata without any loss, and you'll have virtually no learning / conversion curve.

I've been using gitlab-ce both at work and home/office projects for years. Runs very well via omnibus package, or in docker container; as do CI/CD runners.

@J-2FA Aside from that, bitbucket is the MySpace of git infrastructures. 😉

    Friends don't let friends bitbucket.

@makmm For me it's a big problem and thus I'm moving away.
