I use many opensource free to use projects. So I participate.
In my opinion, if it is not just the matter of money then you can show off your skills with opensource projects. -
Actually one could argue, that if you participate in open source projects inorder to show how great you are and land a bigger job, you are not living the open source spirit :p
Not saying that this applies to you @amitgupta, but it's an interesting thought. Personally I associate open source with freedom and/or trust. -

@paranoidAndroid the only reason why open source became a thing is capitalism. The prospect of personal gain is the core of capitalism and the reason of the rise of the over all wealth in the last 170 years. So you can talk about the spirit of open source as much as you like. Without personal benefit in some way, there wouldn't be open source.

Me: You're already earning good, why are you freelancing?
He: Freelancing is my hobby.
Me: !! Why don't you participate in some open source development? I do.
He: How much do you earn there?
Me: In terms of money? few bucks as donation for 1 coffee in a month.
He: few bucks only !!!
Me: Opensource development can be good for your career. You can get a good job or promotion....
He: I believe in certainty.
