you can install a node version specific to the book.

O'Reilly just published the second edition of "Learning Node", so I suggest you give it a try if you want an updated book.
Node is awesome for so many reasons and is documented very well. #glhf

I wish, however, that native modules integration was better. At the moment it requires messing around with WebKit API mixed with half-baked Node input streams... yuck
