Well the first vm I tryed was good, don't use it because with Ubuntu 18 (no chance to chose an older one), Apache, mysql and php and it was already lagging.
Other than that, perfect.
May just be a few days for the beta -
@jespersh if it's free is ultimated..
No mining or share services, really liked the experience, less the 512mb vram -
Already got a response for the request of a second vps... That was fast.
And found out that limit, if you pick pay by month (your only allowed that in beta, no credit card but also no paid vps yet). -
@GyroGearloose is there any issues with Ubuntu 18 ? I recently setup a vps and went for ubuntu 18. Didn't notice any issues.
-
@HoloDreamer No, but most likely have higher requisites then 14 or 16... With 512mb Ram there isn't much we can do
-
@GyroGearloose I have an 8 core, 16gig, 1TB for 25$ a month already, but thanks π
-
Thanks for the tip, gonna check it out...
Guess that the new Premium offering was too much for their servers, Can't SSH to the account now...
Btw, how does Promox differs from VirtualBox? Looks better till now... -
Condor323326y256GB RAM for free..? Huehue π€
Well I'll check it out but I wonder how sketchy it'll be.. -
@GyroGearloose "free in beta" just smells like a problem about to happen, like they'll just surprise charge or just instakill your server once they leave beta, could use it for CPU mining I guess lol, but that'll probably get one banned
-
Yep, its good to test stuff out, mostly.
I even turn my VPS off when I leave so I don't waste resources.
Also for anything that requires a lot of computing, like compiling big programs... or Web apps with good speed. (A lot better than my server in the corner with the limited shit 300/500 kbps upload I have -
Btw, Also requested a more gentile update to the VPS I already had and didn't use for 2 months... and it's already updated.
4vCpu, 12Gb Ram, really nice -
@GyroGearloose from the pricing, looks like it's little more expensive than vultr or linode.
Anyway, i can't try out their service since i don't have credit card. -
@Condor really? I already had an account but don't remember to give my CC... And I usually don't give on such sites or create a temporary with 0.01 € in there.
Maby when I created it thry didn't ask for CC, to bad.
Still, if your bank allows you to create temporary CCs for online shopping... -
Anyhow, it works, probably temporary while they test such servers...
Still, having a machine that costs 3500€ per hour for free is kwel.
I ssh into it.. And... And...
I already have Linux, so no need to learn more on vps (fucked a few vps while learning, but now I know how to operate Linux from the command line, at least the basics).
Have my own server for testing...
All is good -
Hey everyone, I'm Matt, I work at SkySilk. Thanks for the post and interest!
Yes, we are legit, there is no catch or sketchiness. We are a new platform looking for exposure and feedback from devs like you while we are beta testing, as simple as that. :)
If you have any trepidations about our beta offer, feel free to join our public Discord server and ask some of our other testers how they've enjoyed their experience so far: https://invite.gg/SkySilk
For those upset about the CC requirement, we understand the frustrations and are actively looking into other methods of verification such as PayPal.
We are actively in development and always looking to add new features, feel free to check us out and let me know if you have any questions or feedback.
Thanks!
P.S. One additional note being discussed above for clarity;
Cryptomining, Illegal Activity, Malicious Activity, or any activity that generates unfavorable network load is subject to review/account suspension. -
@JoshBent
No mining allowed, otherwise no catch or surprise charges once we leave beta: https://help.skysilk.com/support/...- -
@JoshBent he seams to work there.
I've also been recommended their site here, in DevRant and it's really good so far -
@Matt-SkySilk hey Matt, can I ask 3 questions?
How long will the beta last? Any ideas?
When it ends can we still access the servers to retrieve data?
Will there be a free plan in the future? For data retrieval even the lowest would do.
Thanks, it's rare th see companies who think more then money. -
@GyroGearloose I have my ways ;)
How long will the beta last? Any ideas?
- We project to be in beta for a few more weeks, we'll be releasing more details soon.
When it ends can we still access the servers to retrieve data?
- Yes, there will be an ample migration period to allow for data retrieval, otherwise machines will be removed so no surprise charges. More details here: https://help.skysilk.com/support/...-
Will there be a free plan in the future? For data retrieval even the lowest would do.
- There is not going to be a free plan once we are live, but as you see we have many different offerings among the Basic, Standard, and Premium levels, with the Basic level machines starting as low as $1.00/mo, Standard at $2.00/mo, and Premium at $5.00/mo.
All beta users will also be receiving a 25% lifetime discount on their monthly statements as a thank you for helping us test. -
@JoshBent Nope not a paid promo, looks like @GyroGearloose found us and decided to share.
We are offering a 25% off lifetime discount to all beta users as a thank you for testing and feedback. -
@Matt-SkySilk nice to know about the discount. Can I buy /rent a vps with the points I get? Probably going for a 2gb ram
-
@GyroGearloose Yep!
You can use your SkyPoints for Account Statement Credit or for other rewards like Amazon and Visa Gift Cards once we go live. -
@Matt-SkySilk Bah don't care about those. I want a good vps for cheap until I start making web apps
-
@GyroGearloose where did you find them?
@dfox can we get a duplicate IP check on matt? is there another account associated with it? I am just really suspicious of this all, when something is too good to be true, it usually is -
dfox426036y@JoshBent seems fine to me. @GyroGearloose has been here since early 2017, and is obviously a real user. It’s pretty common for companies to search social media for mentions and engage with interested people. As long as the first most is natural (which it seems like it was here), I see no problem with it.
Also, I don’t really see what’s too good to be true. They seem to be open about the fact that they will be charging after they end the promotional period. -
@JoshBent it's true. I only believed when run a Linux command. Matt's account is new and was created because I showed to much interest. Hey, I only need a small vps but I bet a few of out devs would use those VMs to compile big code and research.
Like... Other than mining and stuff, why else would you use such a beast? -
@GyroGearloose You asked" Can I buy /rent a vps with the points I get? " sorry if my response was unclear, you can use points to redeem for credit towards your VPS. You can redeem that credit at any time. So I think you might care about them ;)
In regards to why someone might use the Premium cluster, there are plenty of reasons; for example, companies that require Big Data/complex Machine Learning or Enterprise-Scale Rendering/Compiling to name a few.
That is why we also have smaller plan sizes and different options available with the Standard and Basic plans as well. Something for everyone. -
Condor323326y@Matt-SkySilk Interesting! If I may ask though, why did SkySilk go so large with its open beta? I mean, it's not everyday that you see servers with 256GB of RAM being lent away for free. Is it for stability testing, regression tests of some kind? I can only imagine that it'd be some change in the upper hypervisor end (assuming that these aren't dedi's) that needs testing of some sort. This is something that as a sysadmin I'm quite interested in.. mind elaborating? Thanks!
-
I would definitely not pay 3500€ for a game server lol @Matt-SkySilk anyway you guys have been awesome so far, might get a client for that. I value good, rare, costumer service
-
Thanks @dfox! You hit the nail on the head.
@JoshBent if you have any other questions feel free to join our Discord (linked above), you'll see we are active in there as well and you can ask other users who find us through posts like this that will back our legitimacy.
We are pretty active in jumping into threads like this where we are mentioned organically:
https://reddit.com/r/VPS/...
https://reddit.com/r/... -
@Condor Thanks!
We started with smaller availabilities and ramped up to our larger plans to be able to stress test load. Since we are giving away a free service it's hard to get a real gauge for what our production load will be, but we obviously don't want to find out we can't handle something after we launch, so we're trying to get any kinks we can out now before we go live next month.
We also know free things are a good way to get people's attention, being a new company we like attention! ;) -
@makmm SkyPoints are earned for joining our beta and for other things like following our social media. You can redeem them for SkySilk Account Credit or for real rewards like Amazon or Visa Gift Cards.
You earn SkyPoints on any transaction (1x SkyPoints for Standard and 10x for Premium) and we will also be introducing other ways to earn such as with bug bounties, written tutorials, contests, referrals, and other methods.
SkyPoints are never reset and will be available for redemption once we go live. -
@dfox thanks for checking, I was mainly quickly skimming through the screenshots on my phone, that's why some plans looked much more attractive.
--
After looking into it, it's really not that attractive, especially considering it's a proxmox guest and not a dedicated root that you're getting (wouldn't be a problem if the splits/prices were better), not to mention that you're always doing some downgrade, either in bandwidth, storage, ram, cores or speed.
There's simply no option to have 1TB+ storage, unlimited bandwidth and proper speed, for a max of 20$ a month and also there's no proxmox install option, which could be handy. -
@JoshBent btw I learned about them here a few months ago, in a topic about free VPS. Used two to get confident before moving to Linux and I'm happy with the results and the company.
Like I requested another vps because I tought o couldn't change the first. Got the second one and then changed the first for a 4 core 8gb wich was also accepted -
Condor323326y@Matt-SkySilk 2 birds with one stone, publicity and stress testing at the same time! Smart marketing move I have to say. I don't have a credit card nor do I have a PayPal account so sadly I can't participate in the beta test, but I'd be very interested to see where it eventually goes. Keep up the good work!
-
@JoshBent The Premium Plans are just one of our pricing options, we have other plans and configurations available under our Basic and Standard offerings as well that are more affordable.
-
@Matt-SkySilk I know, but then as said you have slower speeds, capped bandwidth, even less storage etc
-
Condor323326y@Matt-SkySilk Ah yes, in case you'd like to hang around here on devRant some more.. welcome! Home of frustrated devs who rant about pretty much everything :3
-
@JoshBent The storage and hardware resources are exactly the same amounts across all three tiers. The difference comes in network speeds, transfer speeds, and availability of offerings such as Backups and Snapshots, among other features listed on each tier.
That said, our Standard offering is in-line with (if not more powerful than) what is generally available at the same price points from other providers. If you have a specific plan/configuration in mind I'd be happy to take a look at what our most comparable plan is so you can compare apples to apples. -
@Matt-SkySilk the cpus are definitely more powerful, that's why I didn't mention any cores, though that matters the least if you need 1TB of space (others have the advantage of HDD(s) being cheaper), unlimited bandwidth and 16GB of ram in the range of 20$ a month, which with ssd systems is easily going into the hundreds or thousands.
-
@JoshBent you mean storage over speed? I agree.
I need mostly a dedicated web server so I'll go for speed -
Condor323326y@JoshBent For file servers that's a very valid concern yes. That along with the limited link speeds is something that caught my eye as well. The €1.21 (VAT included) hosts that I have at Aruba Cloud have 20GB SSD and a 1Gbps link (usually around 600Mbps to other hosts around the world) so speed seems to be at a premium here compared to the competition. A lot of RAM and many cores seems to make these servers quite a neat choice for compilation servers though. @Haxk20 may be interested in this for Android compilations?
-
@GyroGearloose @Condor I was mainly looking if I can get a better deal than what I have with my dedicated root and running proxmox off of 20GB SSDs simply ain't happening lol
@Condor all their bigger servers are out of stock already and he would be better off just spinning up a big DO instance (from a snapshot) whenever he needs it and then deleting, paying only the actual active time, not a month worth of thousands -
Condor323326y@JoshBent Personal server? Here I'm using a donated one from a fellow sysadmin with 8GB EEC RAM, 2x80GB WD Blacks in RAID-1 coupled with 2x2TB WD Reds in RAID-0 for my Proxmox host. So I'm virtualizing against physical hardware where the only thing that costed me money was those Reds which I got for €100.. so meh :) it serves the purpose. And virtualizing once against hardware yields far better performance than nested virtualization anyway. Only disadvantage would be that unless you have your own DC or someone else's to host it at, you probably wouldn't be able to serve the internet with that :/ which is pretty much what I'm dealing with too. I am considering to mount a VM in there to my internet servers over the VPN connection though, to cheaply increase their storage space, albeit at low link performance from my home ISP.
-
Condor323326y@JoshBent hmm.. what provider? If they can run Proxmox, that may be interesting for me to look into as well.
-
Condor323326y@JoshBent START-2-M-SATA by any chance? Looks like those are dedi's.. how many public IP's do you get with them?
-
@Condor have been saying that it's a dedi all the time I believe, but you get one IP, but for like $3~ per IP a month youll get any amount you want, you can also purchase an entire network, that's where routing comes in though, so you just need one IP and then internally route.
Though if you really want multiple IPs - ovh gives free IPs in their dedi package iirc, but you get way less than in online.net for the price -
Condor323326y@JoshBent Hmm, I see. Seems like a nice option! 300Mbps wouldn't be that much over the 60Mbps link I have at home, but when I feel that some Proxmox VM should see the wide world at a higher performance than it would be if I link them to the Aruba Cloud servers, I'll keep this hoster in mind. Thanks for the suggestion!
-
-
@Matt-SkySilk I guess you guys should also get some servers with hdds to sell storage servers and get a bigger cut off the market...
-
@Haxk20 I never had to compile an android kernel, but I compiled linux kernels just fine on my online.net dedi root, which is 20$ a month, but as said you could just do a server on DO, do a snapshot and then just always delete and spawn from the snapshot whenever you need it: https://digitalocean.com/pricing/ which could be just $0.50 or $1 depending on how many hours you need for the CPU optimized instances for example.
-
@Haxk20 hey.
If you only need 8gb ram and 4 cores, wouldn't a single board computer or micro do It? Not talking about pi but there are some with 8gb ram and minimum quad-core....
Or a bones computer, no graphic card, hexacore up, 16gb ram, you can mount such for 300, 400$/€
Just an π‘since you end up paying that for one month. You get a board that suports up to 4 ram rails and you can even upgrade it latter. I mean, you end up paying as much for such vps in less then one year... -
@Haxk20 have you read what I wrote or clicked the link? DO goes as high as 32 vCPU and 64GB RAM for their CPU optimized droplets and up to 192GB RAM and 32 vCPU for their other droplets
there's a wide range to pick from and you pay only per hourly (therefore snapshot and delete, so you then only pay for the snapshot being stored and per hourly cost whenever you spawn a droplet from the snapshot), but if all you need is 4 vCPU and 8 gigs, that's: $0.060/hr or for cpu optimized: $0.119/hr -
@GyroGearloose you'll be spending much less with the snapshotting on DO and if you one time need more CPU or RAM you can just scale in seconds.
-
@JoshBent yes saw the reply with the prices, a few hours a month and it gets really cheap
-
@GyroGearloose @JoshBent @Haxk20 just wanted to let you know I brought our conversation to our product development team and as a result, we've increased our bandwidth across the board as a direct result of your feedback, our new max bandwidth offered is 800Mb/s w/ a full Gig coming in the near future
Pricing will not be affected by these changes :) -
@Matt-SkySilk niceeee. That's why I like you guys.
Btw did you talk about servers just for storage as an extra? -
@Matt-SkySilk nice improvement for sure, but how stable is that connection? since there had to be a reason why you limited it before but now unlocked it, also as @GyroGearloose mentioned, there needs to be some high storage hdd servers to be actually competitive.
-
@GryoCearloose @JoshBent Other storage options have been discussed for possible implementation in the future.
The connection is just as stable as before, we just bought a bigger/faster pipe.
What did I just saw?? And I had a free VPS on this service with 512mb, could be using a duped computer :-D sended request, have my doubts...
