Setup a pi to be functioning as vpn server and pihole tonight.

Now working on a Jasper voice assistant on another pi, because I can choose for offline speech processing and don't have to use a mass surveillance network for this (google).

Today is a good day.

    Do let me know the results on Jasper! I've been trying to find an alternative to Google Assistant for a while now.

    Sounds cool.

    Been hosting pihole and openvpn on a RPI for like 6 months now. Works great.

    @olback how do you manage port forwarding?
  • 2
    @ewpratten what do you mean? It's not a router.
  • 3
    @olback I mean how do you access the vpn from outside your house.
  • 0
    @ewpratten oh, just open a port on your router (in this case, 1194).

    @olback I don't have a static IP for my router...

    @ewpratten you need that.

    There is another way. Get a vps and run openvpn through an SSH tunnel.

    @ewpratten @olback you can also use a dynamic dns - most decent routers have integrated support for a few providers already, look it up.
    If not/as an alternative, you can always use freemyip.com, and run a script that updates it daily/hourly. Works quite well, in my experience.

    (Besides, even if you don't have a static ip, ISPs don't swap them around very often - I've had the same IP for years even though it wasn't static. Also, IPv6 tends to be static as well since there are so many available, so you could use that instead if available)

    (Also, if you set up OpenVPN on a VPS, there's no point in using an SSH tunnel in the first place)

    @undef Nope. The second I figure out how to do wire guard with mysql auth it will be, though

    @Condor It crashed with an unknown compile error 😬

    It should have packages arch so will try that tonight

    Isn't a Raspi a bit too weak for VPN? Afaik it's quite a cpu-heavy task to be a VPN server.

    @TobyAsE The load doesn't come above 0.10 ;)

    I also have some nat vps's on which the load doesn't come above 0.50 with multiple vpn connections (1 core and 128 or 64mb ram.)

    Did need to open the post post to know who wrote it...

    @linuxxx Did it work well? I think about experimenting around with Jasper, too.

    @Benedikt I just couldn't get arch to work properly, I'll stay debian 😥

    So nope but that's the fault of my skill set.

    @linuxxx A pity! But thank you nevertheless!
