xewl41266yI'd give him a list of M$ backed projects, and attach it to his Letter of Recommendation for his next job.
-
ReactXP? If so what are it's pros? I honestly didn't use it but I am interested to know how it helps in RN development
-
@rusty-hacker I try to avoid any service or language written/maintained by a company which is integrated within a (government powered) mass surveillance network.
-
@linuxxx the ethics/morals of the authors of a framework has literally nothing to do with whether it's a good framework or not.
-
Yeah, I'm with everyone else on this one. I use React at work and at home because it is a really nice library to work with. I get that people might not like Facebook as a business but as a developer, they are contributing quite a bit. Libraries and VR are their strong points.
-
@mjones44 It doesn't but it does have to do with whether or not I'd (want to) use something from a company which pretty much fucks over all their users.
@vlatkozelka Yup.
@Puddinglord I understand what you're saying but I just choose to stay away from any company which - look at my last comment before this one.
I don't get why it'd be so hard to understand why one wouldn't want to use any tools made or maintained by a mass surveillance company? -
Also going to call in a dear friend on this one: @-Tor (hoping I have the right one 😅)
-
@vlatkozelka Yes, indeed. I don't think some people can grasp the fact that other people might not want to have *anything* to do with companies which are integrated within mass surveillance programs.
Question for you: why is that? -
@linuxxx I agree with you in most cases. Unfortunately sometimes other solutions are just not there.
For instance when you want to start a company and want website/mobile/tv apps. Solutions other than react (native), flutter or xamarin just aren’t there.
Where do you think Apple should fall? I don’t like their product:pricing or how closed they are, but it seems to me that they are doing well in terms of privacy. Do I have some sort of misconception around that? -
@rusty-hacker I'll get attacked on this one but: their software is closed source so you can't verify anything and according to the snowden leaks they're just as integrated within government powered mass surveillance as Google etc.
Cordova, anyone? -
@linuxxx to answer the question you asked @vlatkozelka, imo it's plain childish.
I totally get your reasoning around this mass-surveillance thing and all that and to a certain degree I really respect you because you really mean it.
But now you're saying "it's bad" without really making a point - simply because there is no point.
I get why you don't buy microsoft products - because it supports them.
I get why you don't use google software - because they mine data.
I get why you don't want to use closed source apps - because heck knows what they do under their hood.
But now you wouldn't use some free open source shit from them just because it's somehow connected to them?
That makes no sense. Your ultra clean android is still google. Your Intel processor is still supported by microsoft. Assuming @filthyranter is right - even fucken linux itself is connected to microsoft.
I love you and respect your ideology (mostly), but if you want to ship it this way you'd need to live under a rock. -
@nitwhiz I know I'm not going to change your mind but that's alright, we have different views on things.
I don't find it childish at all, it's plain logic to me and where you find that I don't have a point; I think that's my entire point.
As for android, if you have an alternative which allows the use of at least signal and devRant through an entirely non-google related system, please let me know. Until that day, I'll use android and de-google it as much as I can.
I try to stay away from projects/softwares which are connected to the companies that I consider bad (not your usual kind of bad, really bad) as much as possible.
That's not entirely possible and tbh (don't take that personally), the living under a rock argument is something I head every day but I try to, as said above, stay away from those companies as much as I can.
Does it go far as for morals/ethics? Maybe, for me it's the most normal thing in the world.
The most beautiful example of how far someone can go for their ethics/morals (imo) is what the co-founder of WhatsApp did when he left Facebook recently. He didn't agree with advertising inside WhatsApp and wanted to leave right away but that'd mean that he had to leave behind 850 million dollars in stock he held at the company because his contract said he could only keep it when leaving if they were actively working on implementing advertising within WhatsApp, not when they were only 'orientating'.
He had the choice between waiting it out for probably a few more months and leave with stocks worth 850 million or leave right away without that 850m.
He left without because he couldn't ethically/morally stand behind it or even wait it out.
This is just an example as for how something totally extreme can be a very logical thing to another one. -
@linuxxx I haven’t had a chance to dig deep, but recently I saw an article about the release of /e/ https://e.foundation
I think they maintain a repo of android apps as well, which should have signal on there. -
Also you mentioned Cordova, but the apps which you produce are not comparable with native or rn/flutter/xamarin in terms of performance and ux. (Talking from experience of developing and using the results)
So a Developer not using a React-native component library because it is backed by Microsoft
This is next level shit
PS:- the library is actually pretty decent
rant
microsoft hate
