Having to approach your manager and bringing you that you haven't been meeting your deadlines due to being distracted dealing with depression is by far one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.. If you need help reach out someone is always willing to help!

I think it's good that you're honest, it takes strength to admit when you're not doing well. I hope you get the support you need while you deal with this.

@ihatecomputers I am getting support so no worries there. But I know depression and other mental illnesses are pretty big in this industry so I'm hoping that maybe this helps someone else also.

Hope you start to feel better soon.

I know how you feel, but it’s hard reaching out to your manager when you don’t trust them 😔

@Tayloza, this is a very valid point, as the distrust itself worsens the anxiety surrounding performance, leading to a sense of failure hitherto more depression.

The best way to manage this is education and formal policies surrounding chronic illnesses on the managerial side. Existing structures around this stuff is one of the perks with larger orgs.

The thing that has worked best for me is to be blunt about any conditions though - especially in smaller orgs. Removing the mystery for them and providing you with a bullshit metre as to whether they are worth working for our not definitely helps with the next steps.

A lot of self-gaslighting happens with depression and you don't want to let it take over your day.
