@Master-Chief, since "for (int i=0; n<500; i++)" will never end, I assume you are still doing it. :-)

c3ypt1c96638ythis is why I write back door activation access to my projects if I'm developing for a friend....

@Letmecode Female here. Not a fan of the "rape face" comment but I don't see "anal sex" as specifically hostile towards women. Maybe that one woman. I'm open to discussing. This is DevRANT - there's going to be hostility expressed!
That said, also not a fan of downvoting someone raising objection to those things. Lord knows we women in tech get more than our ration of crap for simply being women in this space. I totally get her objection, whether or not I agree with it. She doesn't deserve to be beat up for it.

"That one woman" points to the subject of the original rant, and not to anyone in this thread
-
kerith2968y@aokayla While I agree with some of the points you made, I am curious to know how the implications would change if the gender of said colleague was not specified.
I agree that there might have been other reasons, and in particular in the situation as presented I feel that both parties have part of guilt. But that has already been discussed.
I am just curious to know what would change in the implications of the post if the sexes of the op and said colleague were unknown. -
orijin20208y@aokayla despite this being devrant, suprisingly most developers don't think binary.
your fear of inforcing stereotypes in this community is unjustified and i would put my hand in fire for most of the guys here that they don't look down on woman in tech in general.
i would understand your concern if this would show up as news on cnn and their comment section or some other tabloid.
if you experienced problems like this, there will always be people talking you down, no matter the gender. it usualy comes from bad, unsecure devs that feel threathend for their position.
whyining about it never helps, do your stuff, do it good and rise above them. -
dfox426098ySorry, but I'm not deleting this. Like I've said a million times, if you don't like a rant downvote it and move on. For every person who was offended by this there were probably 100 who weren't. I'm not saying you shouldn't be offended, but don't expect me to delete rants because you don't like them. You're not going to like every rant on devRant and some might be edgy.
We immediately delete comments/rants that target specific users or are overtly racist, etc, but that doesn't include general stories. There's been plenty of rants posted by women describing situations at work and calling out men, and I wouldn't want to delete those either...
So in the end, vote and move on. 99% of rants on devRant are non-gendered, non-sexual, making this a non-issue IMO. -
dfox426098yAlso, just to be clear, I've deleted a few comments in the past/called out users who have gone out of their way or said creepy things directly to female users because that was out of line.
But in my view, this doesn't come close to that and had no intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable. It was edgy, and the comments were edgy, but yeah, that's not against the rules and I don't want to turn this into "moderate everything that's sort of edgy."
I also agree with what's previously said. Almost every user I've seen here shows a lot of respect to women in tech. We've had some "questionable" posts of women posting photos of themselves at hackatons and ending up with 200 upvotes... That's certainly not a rant but really, who cares? A few people asked me to remove those too, but to me that's over-moderation. -
skonteam9628y@aokayla do you know the meme "doesn't matter, had sex" ? because I think it's the central point of misunderstanding here. and please don't worry about women being picked on or harassed in any dev community generally they are too busy fighting about programming languages :p .
-
dfox426098yJust one more note I wanted to leave here that I responded to in an email to a user who emailed me about this rant:
As a community, I think we can do awesome things to support women and minorities in tech. We've had ideas for some charity efforts since the begging and we're hoping we can grow to the point where it's realistic to start implementing those.
I think we're a pretty damn good example of a community where women are accepted, encouraged and generally very welcomed. And we want to keep being like that.
About stereotypes, and my opinion: when I first read this rant, right when it was posted, I thought it was really funny, mainly due to the first 2 comments and their reference to SNL. I didn't once think of any kind of stereotype. I would have found it just as funny, and I think I speak for everyone, if the situation was reversed and it was posted from a female point of view. -
orijin20208ythe amount of butthurt in this rant is too damn high. just relax people!
EDIT: no pun intended -
yarwest26658yBtw, at no point does this rant state anything about the dev skills (or any skills for that matter) of this lady. Just something I saw some on use as an argument .-.
-
I found the rant to be extremely funny and then all of a sudden Rachel Maddow shows up and turns it into a sexism feminism issue. Give me a break. Lord forgive any man for ever feeling used by a cute flirty woman trying to breeze her way through college or a project.
Not all women are raised to play on a level playing field and if you think for a moment that those types of women won't put a little hitch in their step or a little charm in their flirtation to use a guy who in all honesty, probably has feelings for her, then you're incredibly naive.
Don't worry @aokayla, we know that you're not the user type, and although I'm poking a little fun, no I don't find all women to be one way or another. I'm just saying that the OP is probably justified in the original rant. -
yarwest26658y@lquessenberry I kinda feel like this has been done and discussed, no need to revive this issue imo.
Let's keep it positive :) -
@yarwest I'm a little late to the party I see. Still doesn't mean that I can't have an opinion. I am actually very upbeat and positive, but after reading all the back and forth I was compelled to chip in. I don't really need anyone to tell me when or where I should speak.
-
yarwest26658y@lquessenberry .-.
I'm not trying to censor you or whatever, I'm just saying, since basically everything has already been said, why tear open old wounds?
But hey, you do you -
@yarwest I understand, and honestly I just saw how old the comments are so I'm late. I get it.
-
lig114458y@aokayla girls who call this hostile just need to learn to make that kind of jokes about penises.
Seriously. That is tech joke not the women hating joke. That joke is about sex. Why not? We joke about masturbation here. We joke about guys cannot talk to girls here. Because we are honest here. And I'm sure that no one joking about backend here will ever say something bad about girls because we like girls, like to be friends with girls and want to make girls happy.
Well, there are stereotypes about programmers and we like to laugh on that because otherwise most of us will just cry about it. -
fluffy431588yguess you can only develop software and not relationships. we can't have it all. *pat

My colleague (female) hooked up with me, made me do all her project work and dumped me as soon as it was complete.
