This is the last straw. I am so done with Chrome.

I woke up AGAIN this morning to my MacBook shining away brightly, having not gone to sleep the ENTIRE night. I did some better research this time and discovered it's actually Chrome that is causing this.

Yes Chrome is deciding whether my MacBook goes to sleep or not.

I am not ok with this. Worse, it doesn't even have any ability to change this behavior. It's basically a hidden "feature" of Chrome: it wastes your hydro too!

This is not the first time this has happened either. Last time my MacBook wasn't properly plugged in and it completely drained the battery, shutting it right off. I ranted about that already.

But I am just SO fucking livid about this right now. What on EARTH is going through google's mind that they think this is in any way even REMOTELY acceptable?

I've already filed a bug report but I think this is the last straw. I am just sick to death of Chrome. This bug is literally costing me money and damaging my property.

Shove it right up your fucking ass, Google. Right up there and twist it around.

I'm switching back to a real browser.

    @M1sf3t Fuck's sake… I was thinking Firefox but now I'm not so sure.

    Maybe I ought to give Safari half a chance.

    @EvilArcher I don't want to have to DO anything. I just want it to go to sleep when I'm not using it. Is that really too much to ask?

    @irene In the 30 years odd I've been using computers, this is the first time I can recall that a computer I've owned has consistently failed to go to sleep when it should.

    I don't think there's any excuse for it at all. Why should I train myself to accommodate their shitty programming?

    Wait... OSX lets a user space program decide whether the OS can go to standby? What could go wrong?

    I honestly think software has gotten SO bad that we just expect applications to be defective these days and we don't even question it.

    We build these fragile teetering towers of dependencies of one technology built atop another, where any bug lower down gets magnified through everything built on top of it.

    The web is the perfect example. It's such a shitty platform. There are so many inconsistencies, incongruences, and outright mistakes that we have to try to patch them with frameworks and it's all just so many fucking layers of poorly written code that even the best attempts are doomed to failure.

    The whole state of software today just has me really depressed. This is nothing new to me, but today's got me really feeling it.

    @ilPinguino I've been a mac user for pretty much my whole life, but the truth is I expect this will probably happen at some point. Maybe sooner than later the way things are going.

    Firefox works great without signing in. I hear Pocket and Sync are nice, but I just won't.

    Also - Chrome runs out of memory pretty fast while Firefox has no problems with thousands of tabs. :P

    @neriald There was no video playing. I would have heard that. I had a YouTube tab open but the video was either paused or not started. I often have lots of videos open in various tabs.

    So yes I know you want to be able to suspend sleep *temporarily* while watching a video. But we're talking 8 hours+ of it just sitting there unlocked, doing nothing.

    I have a video paused in Safari right now and Safari is not "preventing sleep" in Activity Monitor.

    Even if this is somehow YouTube's fault, YouTube is still Google so it hardly makes a difference as my anger is still directed to the right place.

    @ilPinguino Linux? As long as you don't mind waiting minutes for your Open Source word processors and spreadsheets to open or recalc. Fix this and I'm there! I won't hold my breathe since I've been waiting nearly 20 years. Great OS for servers.

    @jrscott-sc I don't, it instantly works and installs, not like MSFT Office which hangs on install.

    @irene Working on multiple projects + searching shittons of things + doing stuff on 10+ servers: just talking for myself here but nope I can't just close everything :/

    @jrscott-sc Not sure where you live but (Linux + ssd) libreoffice opens in about 0.5 seconds and I haven't had to fix a single thing for the past years so yeah.

    But yes, it's great for servers! (disclaimer: I'm a Linux server engineer professionally :P)

    @neriald unless you configure it to do, no.

    @ilPinguino as you can see it is normal for user space programs to have such privilege on system (blocking sleep/hibernation etc.).

    Therefore not macOS fault. I’d say chrome is the problem here probably some shitpage got stuck as streaming even though it is not.

    Chrome tips

    1) Don't let chrome run at background.

    2) Use one tab (or similar plugin) and save all your precious tabs.

    3) Close chrome.

    Firefox remark

    1) You don't need an email/account to use Firefox if you don't mind missing the sync features.
