Is there such a thing as a front-end developer or are we all becoming either UX engineers or JavaScript developers?

An interesting article from Chris Coyier made me think.

The man is right. Although in my mind, frontend developer never was a thing. People are either great at ux or engineering.
If you think you're great at both you're simply not competing against good enough people.

Interesting article. Here's a different perspective. I write Windows applications. When I'm writing C# to pull data from the ether, I am thinking "How do I get data to populate my models". When I am writing XAML or fleshing out but models in C#, I am thinking about UX and how best to present data to the user. At no time am I thinking "front end" or "back end". When I can work on a "task" rather than only a subtask focused on a part of some imaginary stack definition, I find the results are better. So maybe the web world is too focused on pigeon holing themselves and the work into really small silos. IMO, in that direction lies crap code that nobody understands fully or can maintain.
