Update: 40 minutes in and I know the home row and a lot of top row. But it's such a struggle! I can barely manage 10wpm. Anyone looking at me would've thought I was suffering from constipation.

I don't wanna learn writing on that thing for 3 reasons:

0) Learning curve

1) Mental collision with qwerty

2) If I get a job and can't bring my own keyboard I'll have to use qwerty anyway

@Chrupiter the mental collision is mind bending. I was struggling so much it felt like holding an infinity stone.
But I have nothing better to do and if it can help my move fingers less, why not.

Even I don't have a physical dvorak keyboard. I've just changed the soft layout to dvorak.

A geek girl I know uses a Neo keyboard - kinda like Dvorak but much better for the German language. I'm also thinking about switching some time. I mean - the default layout that we all use is just stupid.

@mpie Not true. If you can save like half of your typing (or more) it is really helpful and not just fancy nerd stuff.

I hope you have fun learning it! I switched to Dvorak about 15 years ago. It is way more comfortable. Never looked back.

Tell me if it's just me but the "rhythm" of Dvorak is just beautiful!

Tried learning it recently, but stopped because having all of the vowels on one hand felt beyond unnatural, and led to some real uncomfortable patterns when typing vowel combinations.

You're not alone. In the practice sessions, some common words popped up and the rhythm was just beautiful. At first I thought I was having some kind of placebo because of everything I read.

@benj I'm going to have to go back and forth between qwerty and dvorak too. There's a real possibility that I'll be left completely broken. Can't qwerty and certainly can't dvorak.

@RantSomeWhere wow talking about getting things out of context. “Designs to be” does not mean it works that way for everybody. And than you try to explain what dvorak is or something like that... seriously? You don’t think I know what it is and that I’d put some random comment in here? People need to use common sense! Not that it was designed without common sense.

@RantSomeWhere actually qwerty had a purpose too, to slow down the typist. It was designed for typewriters and if the typist was fast the rods would get jammed.

@mpie Your logic is flawed. Of course you produce the same amount of code / text / whatever. But you spend only a fraction of the time and effort typing it. Which is only logical when you check the history of our status quo.

I made the switch to Dvorak just before starting a 2 week uni assignment, a few of my classmates were trying it too but gave up in the end. I was the only one who persevered through, and I'm glad I did. After 12 months using it, I don't think my speed has improved so much, but typing definitely feels more comfortable, and it has benefited my wrists, along with a more ergonomic keyboard.
My tip would be don't try switching back and forth for things that feel difficult or need doing in a hurry. You need to stick with one layout to get your brain used to it. Also be aware that you'll loose the ability to type in QWERTY over time, so you can't use your co-workers keyboards, but it's very funny when they try to use yours...

@FuzzBang That's what is bothering me. I'm making progress with Dvorak but I don't want to lose qwerty. I keep switching back and at times struggle with typing in either layout. When I don't think about the layout, I type well in either layout. I am in a weird space right now.

@dr-ant I had a similar experience. I decide I wasn't making any progress with ether because doing so mostly just confuses your brain. So in the end I commited fully to Dvorak (I even use it on my phone keyboard) and accepted loosing the ability to touch type in QWERTY. This can be annoying at work when you're trying to use someone else's keyboard. I think it's possible to revert to QWERTY if I needed to, But you can always switch back briefly without the need to touch type because the letters are printed on the right keys. I suggest commiting fully to Dvorak and stick with it as much as possible to avoid confusing your brain. It'll take a couple of weeks before it starts becoming second nature. Just don't do it in the middle of a uni assignment!

@FuzzBang haha, thanks for your advice. I have thought about it. I'm able to touch type in both layouts. With Dvorak my speed varies but I can get decent speeds. So I'm not too worried. I did fully commit to Dvorak initially. Now I'm trying to be ambitextrous. 😁
