lxmcf199506yRunning off of a $29 wireless mouse and keyboard combo from Logitech... Wish me luck for when I fire up DOOM 2016 lads and ladets
-
Root797786yI have a problem in that game.
I keep forgetting I have things other than the pistol.
Then again I've gotten really good with that pistol... -
Root797786y@irene The game looks good and runs very well, but other than that it's kind of terrible. I'd give it a 4/10.

Root797786y@lxmcf just being honest π
Having worked in game dev, I have a good idea what the developers went through, and I absolutely don't want to belittle their efforts or achievements. But bleh, the designers? They molded it into yet another pretty console shooter. And don't get me started on the writing.
But from little things hidden in the game, you can feel some of the devs' plight:
`patd/needs/sleep.load` ... `--nocrunch` π π’
Pat D, this is for you. πΊπ»π₯π«π€ -
lxmcf199506y@Root haha yeah I know.
And wait... What writing?
Doom is just about kicking heads in, there's no story -
I loved DOOM just for the run and gun, but agree it is indeed not worth a high rating. What I most loved from development perspective is how Mick Gorden tells about making the music for the game on GDC ππ

Some genes don't need story, but to say story isn't important? Without story there's no motivation for the player to continue, nothing to keep their interest. There's no lingering positive memory afterwards. Without story there is no worldbuilding, no depth. The game turns into cheap entertainment, and is quickly forgotten.
Imagine these games without story and worldbuilding:
NieR Automata
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy
Undertale
Unreal
Mass Effect
Portal
StarCraft
WoW
Just how boring would they be?
Games can absolutely be fun without story and worldbuilding, but those are what can turn a game into a masterpiece. -
lxmcf199506y@Root I think it's more the fact that it highly depends on the game itself, DOOM didn't need a story because the running and gunning was the real focus.
Firewatch needed a story else it would literally just be walking around and have no real reason to play it
Take Minecraft for example, I don't even consider it a game, it's essentially a game engine at this stage but it has no story and is one of the biggest phenomenons out there -
Root797786y@lxmcf A game can make up for lacking in some areas by excelling in others, at least somewhat. But good story always adds, just like good mechanics do.
Don't you fucking love when you go to a LAN, remember the PC, monitor, Xbox and even noodles... Yet still fucking forget your mouse and keyboard .-.
