Disable Windows 10 Auto Updates

1. Run gpedit.msc
2. Set "notify for download and notify for install" according to this screenshot http://i.imgur.com/VjpeDHWh.jpg
3. You will still get an annoying popup saying "get updates" but windows will never autoinstall them and autorestart your machine.

Why is it so complicated to restart computer once a week? Do you also think it's unnecessary to look the front door of your house, because you still need to open it when you come home again.
Windows famous garbage collection has lot to which for... So a restart once a while will only give you a new fresh cup of coffee

This morning 2 of my colleagues had their dotnet setups ruined by the last update. iis features were disabled and all kinds of weirdness was caused.

@jehu My front door doesn't knock itself in the middle of a skype meeting saying "i will automatically open in X minutes whether you like it or not" and then blows wide open and forces me to stop my work

Are you sure that it works with the latest build? Because iirc they made that specific policy useless with the anniversary update.

@jehu I wouldn't mind having to install updates daily, if I could chose when to fucking install them. Gotta reboot real quick? Nope, 15 mins of updates. 5 mins past your set work hours? It will reboot without even warning you. An update fails to install? Every fucking time I turn my PC on it takes 10 mins to try to reinstall it and then roll it back. Thats what's so fucking hard.

@jiraTicket These sound like significant updates... Do you have an IT department and are they using WSUS?

I've managed to stave off the Windows 10 Anniversary update by not having enough space for it to download on C:. Mostly out of laziness.

If you really don't want updates, disable the Windows Update service in services.msc

Start > Windows Updates settings > Change active hours

Done.

I advise NO ONE to do this. Security updates are crucial to keeping your systems secure. Do not put yourself at risk.

I'd go as far as to say this post is actually harmful.

@drRoss This does not remove the ability to update. It just makes windows more like most other OS - YOU can decide when updates should be installed. Just like older versions of windows. And you will still get notification popups when updates arrive so there's no risk of missing it.

@dovipas the colleague with the most recept update told me this seemed to work on his machine as well

@jiraTicket Yeah, which could be never for some people. This is so harmful in a workplace setting, I'm surprised and also not surprised that this post is still up.
