It failed because MS has no experience in being the underdog. They are a one trick pony: leverage the desktop monopoly to gain market share.

That didn't work with phones because all the apps were already available for iOS and Android anyway. It also didn't help that MS broke their promises on Windows Phone upgrade compatibility.

@Fast-Nop the only promise I have seen is that they said they are gonna try to migrate all windows phone 8 to windows 10.

They had it running all the devices but the performance hit was way to big on the low end devices. If they had upgraded them people would have complained that their device was slower than a 40 dollar phone running on android.

@Codex404 it was with WP 6.5/7/8 years ago when MS still might have had some hope. But no, they preferred kicking their early adopters right in the groins, and that's not how you do it.

And no, "it's getting slow" doesn't count. How about making an OS that isn't a resource hogging piece of shit? That is actually BETTER than the competition? Without that, there's no hope from an underdog position anyway.

@Fast-Nop fortunately W10M works without any issues on a 100 euro phone. Something I cannot say of Android or iOS

Yes they didnt have that many apps because they reentered to late, but their development tools were way better than those of Android

@Codex404 well I got my Nokia 6 for 169 EUR, which is not quite 100 EUR, but close. Runs nicely, AND I have tons of apps.

MS would have needed to massively subsidise the whole ecosystem, which is the price they would have had to pay for sleeping as long as they always did.

Well instead, they decided to turn desktop Windows into spyware to get at least some "big data" share on the market. Again, the one trick pony, given that their search engine has also failed.

@Codex404 I don't think that 70 EUR is much money, no. Especially given that I also get access to a lot of apps while WP is meh in that regard.

@Codex404 I've just installed an HP42 emulator app on my Droid this week. Finally, a nice RPN calculator that I've been using for ages under Windows. Well of course there's no WP version.

AND! I can readily code my own stuff for Android because under the hood, it's Linux with POSIX, so it will mostly run just like the PC Linux version. Just need to compile it using the NDK, that's it. Yeah you can do Android stuff in raw C.

The worst part was MS forget about Windows Mobile. PDAs was obsoleted all at once.

I like my Lumia 730, but I'm "forced" to replace it soon ☹

Windows phone software was extremely buggy. And Microsoft delayed patching it.
My mom owned a Windows phone. She really liked it. But the phone would sometimes randomly delete the contact list, sometimes randomly shutdown and refuse to boot, sometimes refuse to make calls etc. She waited nearly 7 months for patches to arrive. Then when she had to buy a new phone , she went for android even though she liked Windows more

@Codex404 my experience with windows phone is that it runs like shit and I have to fight against it as nothing I try to do is easy.

@Konsole all the issues your mom had with Windows Phone is what i am having with android. I know have a note with all family members phonenumbers in my phonecase.

@Codex404 Well android hardware is made by other manufacturers. Whereas in WP, Microsoft did everything. So u would expect it to work properly. Like macs

@Konsole they build it themselves? Sure just like google does with their pixels.
At the time MS started making the hardware (after buying the nokia mobile division) there were two manufacturers of windows phones. MS/Nokia and HP.

Before that there were also Samsung and LG (and possibly others)

@Codex404 It doesn't matter if they built it themselves. If it is their product, they should test it properly and make sure everything works seamlessly.
Just like if something doesn't work in pixel, you can directly blame Google. But if it doesn't work in say a Samsung, it's a bit understandable since Google doesn't take care of the hardware

@Konsole sure, i think your mother had a faulty system then.
My mother, brother and I have had 10 windows phones in total none of us had issues (besides the settings chaos they fixed in w10).

In the time I owned one windows phone Im now at my third android phone having nothing but issues. My mother has a new android phone for a year now and also has quite a few issues.

@Codex404 frankly, I have never faced any issues in android. None whatsoever. Everything works seamlessly. But that could be because I always get stock. I can't tolerate the mods that other manufacturers make
