Mgmt: We will need you to work on Saturday
Me: I'm afraid I can't, I have plans that cannot be rescheduled.

Mgmt: Then please call your coleague out of vacation. Treat this as super urgent.
Me: I do not feel comfortable calling him out as, as you know, he is on leave (family emergencies) and it is a weekend. I do not think it would be ethical to do so either.

Mgmt: *crickets chirping in my mailbox*

    @rutee07 the fuck indeed..

Stuff like this happens in projects with poor management. The one I'm in is not Asia-based, but it still sucks at time and resource mgmt.

They have deadlines for release they say.. Well good for you then, have them if you want. But they do not mean I or any coleague of mine should overtime our asses to make long-running jobs run faster or have nice and shiny test results in an environment that has duct tape and jugaads all over it!

Ftr it takes at least 3 days to eventually deploy new env, while it should take no longer than 30mins in a properly working env. And after each deployment attempt we have to spend a day running tests just to prove the env is flaky.

Fuck it. I'm not gonna be a part of this headless mob. I will do my 9-5/5 duty and I'm out. It's my time after that and I do wtv I want.

If you want to make it till deadlines - for once raise a bar for your infra quality to near-max and then everyone will be happy. Now it's next to 0.

Recently the company I'm currently working for said we have a deadline for november 1st so I was to expect working overtime regularly. Well, no, I have orher plans. Yes but our deadline?! Sorry, you knew this months up front and now suddenly because it seems like we won't make it I need to work overtime? No, not possible.

Normally I don't mind at all as they pay a nice rate for every extra hour but I just want to do my own shit.

I had the opposite today.. the remote team in India has a bridge day because yesterday was a holiday. I mentioned we needed to sync up on a certain coding plan. Our local focal point offered to call the chief dev in India, she'd be at home.

I declined, reasoning it wasn't that urgent, next week would also do. The focal said it would be OK since my company was a customer.

I replied that I appreciated that, but doing such a move unnecessarily would hurt the team's motivation. Especially because I know the chief dev is spending her weekend with her family.

@netikras lemme know if you're really interested in job switching. We might be looking for a new sysadmin. And no, I don't work in HR.

Soo I was offered a huge bonus. Getting that kind of money for just 2 days of work - it did sound tempting. But then again, I had family plans I could not cancel or postpone.

I replied to the bonus offer with: "I cannot commit, but I'll try to help you on best effort basis". Que sera, sera.

I set up a teamviewer on my work lappy, a few shell scripts, some tunneling and went out with my family. Used my smartphone to connect to my lappy and do the stuff. Turns out on Saturday there was not much to do - other team was still prepping the env. I only had to check whether it's ready or not.

On Sunday I had a fam trip planned. And so I went on it. Again with my phone in hand I managed to do my tasks throughout the day, when I had a moment to spare. Walking down the street, waiting for a traff light, etc.

In the end I did all that needed to be done w/o affecting my fam plans and got a huge bonus.

    Yayy! :)
