The equally annoying thing is for popular chat sites that have half-ass support for markdown formatting.

In Messenger in particular, the markdown's rendered only on desktop but not on mobile. So now I have to consider whether my non tech-savy friends are on mobile or desktop before deciding whether to format my chats or not for them not to get weirded out by those markdown characters they might otherwise see.
