It gets really irritating when I get turned down for jobs because, despite provable experience, I don't have a degree in computer science.

I can't go back to college because one of the colleges I was at lost my transcripts. And here, by law, the college you are applying to must have your entire transcript history before admitting you.

So I'm fucked and just hoping to find a company focused more on provable knowledge than a piece of paper. Yay.

You mean your school transcripts? Is there any way for you to get a new copy? Or perhaps try for an online CS degree via Coursera or something? (Idk if they ask for transcripts).

@pk76 that honestly sounds like grounds for legal action, but how viable that is depends on your country, I guess (totally not viable over here for example).

Online degrees could still be a thing though.

@RememberMe it is, and I did, but all that happened was they were fined for not adequately keeping records. I didn't get any of that money, the state did. And I didn't get an exception for my case to apply somewhere regardless.

@M1sf3t yeah it was a clusterfuck involving me reporting who I later found out was his nephew for property damage, then there being a made up story about me assaulting his son. I adamantly maintained if that's what had happened they should be contacting the police not going through the school system. Eventually when I realized things were going nowhere with the Dean, asserted my right to a council hearing, which he denied and then forged my signature on the admission of guilt forms. So he served jail time for forgery.

Even if I'm right and this was revenge from the school, at least I can go back to college eventually. If I actually admitted guilt to that, guilty or not, I'd never be allowed in anywhere.

@M1sf3t depends on the program really, but some of them are equivalents to their on-site courses and don't even mention that it was an online thing. And this is probably better than no degree at all, if for some reason you can't go to college.

Most of these aren't your usual online courses where you just stare at videos, you interact with profs, do assignments, meet other folks doing the course etc. (idk about this particular one, though)

That reminds me of a story:

I was interviewed for a help desk position where I would be assisting end users. I got fairly far into interviews when I was just dropped from communication.

I eventually heard from a mutual who works in the company (who had gotten me the interview in the first place) that I had been turned down because of a lack of programming experience.

@RiderExMachina ugh, employers not really understanding what they are looking for is another irritating issue.

I have a computer science degree but not much experience, so when an employer wants to turn me down they say I'm not experienced enough. Maybe potential employers don't want to hire you for other reasons and use that as an excuse? Is your provable experience professional or personal projects?

And employers weight things differently because they are... different. We've just been running into different employer mindsets probably due to different locations.

My rant is about not finding the right fit for me, just as you haven't found the right fit for you.

I can easily spin this around. If they are telling me it's because I don't have a degree, and you have a degree and are getting told something else, might that just be their excuse?

I know it does seem like that now, but rest assured - almost all companies go for experience over degrees.
