Generally I let it go to voicemail and call them back, explaining I was indisposed or otherwise unable to answer. I've only had a few people get angry, and they were assholes anyway. -
I took a call from my current job while taking a shit but it was bc I didn't recognize the number and assumed it was a spam call (I had been getting the calls from unknown numbers with the same area code I'm in).
I had it on speaker whenever I picked up, but that lasted 0.5 seconds whenever I realized it wasn't a spam call. -

take the call and ask them to call (or tell them that you'll call back, whichever makes more sense) literally in 5 minutes. done that several times. in my opinion, it shows that you're interested, were ready on time, but something unexpected came up, but you're still able to communicate promptly and let them know.
at least that's how i interpret it from my side, and would interpret it from the other, if i was the interviewer.
Question for you all:
You're expecting an important call from a potential employer sometime today (no specific time, just business hours)
When you get the call, you're on the toilet, absolutely ripping ass. Do you let it go to voicemail and call them back later? Answer the phone and take the whole call on the toilet? Take the call and discreetly try and finish your business? Take the call and explain that you need to call them back in about five minutes? Is there a right answer?
