Does it confuse anyone else that the ++ button turns red? I feel like it should be green...

Yeah, and that all the buttons that are things you want to press are red... But actually I've never thought it was a bad design choice, and that it goes with the colour palette.

Google + is red when you plus an item because that is their brand.

Positive things, yes items and a choices don't always have to be green, but I get what you are implicating because we have been indoctrinated by traffic signals; go is green and stop is red, and also green leaves are growth and new life, red leaves are falling and dead.

Here on devRant I think it is purely a good highlight color to let us know we have ++'d the rant.

It's a design choice. We could A/B test it at some point, see if it makes a difference, but I have my doubts it will move any needles
