I'm a diehard Apple fangirl, watch every keynote and have only ever had Macs (my parents are also diehard)

i used to be like that, I started on a 7600 PPC on OS 7.1, hand down from my dad.
My dad has been an apple fan boy since the 80's. I used to do everything on mac, half the time in high skool i couldnt even do my it course work and had to go to a friends place..

I eventually had to switch to linux because a young starter, fresh out of uni, i couldn't afford mac's anymore.
Ever since i've been using linux, i wondered why i didn't use that to begin with, hell there was a RHEL spin off, Yellow Dog, that came with a PPC version. I have even worked on windows for a prolonged time.

I think being a fanboy/girl (whatever it is you are a fan of) is just saying that you are naive in my opinion. Not trying to start a linux vs mac war, and not trying to offend anyone, just stating how i see the world.

@DarkMukke yeah I've been in an Apple bubble for a while now, but my new job is requiring me to use Windows and I'll eventually branch out to Linux I'm sure.

To be fair I also come from a design background, so Apple has always been the clear lead to me in that regard, and so I've been drawn to it from that angle. Now that I'm going deeper in dev I really should branch out but it's kinda intimidating!

@humanbonsai just ask the devRant community on opinions, I'm sure there are enough decent programmers here that know how it is to come from a design background and had to use linux/windows too because work forced you.

Personally i would go for windows, because it just runs all the adobe software as good as on mac (except premiere, cause you need a hell of a gfx card to run that smoothly and mac usually come with decent ones)

@DarkMukke The thing I'm definitely most scared of is a terminal equivalent on Windows. Gotta figure out how to access git, and quick. But actually people on here have already sent me links and docs about windows dev! (This place is seriously the best for jr devs asking broad systems questions.)

@humanbonsai I myself did a shift form OSX to windows the past year, and the 2 most used tools of mine were powerbash and vm. I found it frustrating to use a vm very often and hence switched to Linux. That's a decision i have yet not regretted.

@FleetAdmiral with windows 10 in developer mode you can install ubuntu (granted somewhat buggy) inside windows without the need of a vm, it might be your prefered linux flavour but it does impy you can use unix commands at will

Other tools you might be interested in on windows are: MobaXterm (cygwin based but standalone) that emulates linux, and Notepad++ , which makes things easier when you used to Coda as your standard text editor. When it comes to git, checkout Github Desktop or SourceTree, which will help you to start with git. I agree with @FleetAdmiral, Apple is about clean cut. @DarkMukke if someone came to you with a latest mac and said give me your current machine and I will give you the mac what would you say?

@koukou i have 1 at work, i use it, but i also use my linux machine at the same time (synergy, using 1 keyboard/mouse on 2 machines)

but my answer would be: "What's the catch ?"

If your willing to put in the time, Powershell scripts can be extremely useful in difficult situations. The Windows 10 Anniversary update brought the Bash terminal from Linux. Search for "Enable Windows features" and you'll find it under there.

@drRoss sorry but nothing beats the Linux shell, I tried to force myself into using powershell but the complexity of very simple actions (grep for example) made me almost cry.

@skonteam Lol. PowerShell is EASIER than the Linux shell because it uses objects which means you don't have to deal with things like regex (mostly) you almost can't avoid regex if you want to use grep though, which would be select-string in PowerShell. AND it reads just like a sentence. Honestly if you think the Linux shell is simpler, you haven't tried PowerShell.
