At my previous job, we saved 60% of our bandwidth (and therefore a ton on monthly S3 hosting costs) simply by downsampling the images.

Afterwards, if you looked very closely on a high-res device you could sort of tell the difference in a few of the gradients...

Always optimize your images.

We will probably never win the battle for source sets, but I can dream.
