Thanks for the $1200 check, US Government! I spent it well...

Was it so urgent? Didn't want to wait for the 3000 series?

1200 brutto once. Thats less than my monthly netto(rent already deducted).

@kamen Nope! No fuckin way I buy a first generation 3xxx card. This 2080 will last me 5-10 years.

What's the rationale behind that? I agree that now is probably the best time to buy an RTX 2000 card, but the next gen is expected to be less expensive (or about the same given the current events) and more performant. Moreover, ray tracing is almost like testing the waters with RTX 2000 - and in the same line of thought it's a first gen ray tracing card, whereas with the 3000 series I expect to see some progress in that regard.

BTW, what card are you coming from?

@kamen The rationale is they need a year to work out the kinks and I'm not buying into the hype.

I bought my phone on launch and it works for the most part but has some issues.

    I came from a 1080 (Plain 1080, not TI)

I know I won't see any real performance benefit from the 1080 but the 2080 is a status symbol and the first of it's kind (raytracing)

I wanted one since it came out and now that the government is paying me, and it's a great time to buy one, I did.

I can tell you I have no desire for the 3 series.

that gpu has more memory than any of my devices

probably fucking costs more too now that i think about it

You got a check already? 🤔
  • 1
@ScribeOfGoD Nah, I'm spending in advance... just in case things go out of stock when the checks *do* hit.
  • 2
@AlgoRythm ah, I always like a man with a plan lol

*starts to chew pc case because someone forgot to pay for bills and buy groceries*
  • 3
@melezorus34 We don't need money for groceries! We're programmers... some of the highest paid people around!

    ...and we don't eat!
  • 3
@AlgoRythm You still need coffe, right?? Or you're one of the few chosen ones who don't need that shit to run properly??
  • 0
@AlgoRythm I welcome thee into the "bad decision" club :D
I was thinking of waiting a bit but ended up spending quite a few on my new build back in January. It is awesome!

Which model have you bought, by the way?

wait these are real checks? They're actually doing that?

    @stop well fuck, where's mine?

@Parzi they need to print and to mail it.

@AlgoRythm That's fair. Now that I think of it, I haven't recently bought anything just after release, but I'm interested in the 3080 Ti when it comes out (I also have a GTX 1080 now, looking to jump up to a 34" 1440p 120 Hz where it will struggle for sure). From my experience the software issues happen mostly either in the other camp (AMD) or with brand new games within the first month or two after release.

@MarcoCeccon Seems like it is the best GPU short of the RTX Titan of course. I think it makes no sense if you're playing at resolutions below 1440p (1080p @ >200 Hz might be an exception). Plenty of reviews and benchmarks out there, so it shouldn't be that hard to make up your mind.

    @MarcoCeccon
1: There is no "wrong" GPU (unless you have a system with an AGP slot, lol), though there are a few things to check:
    - PSU compatibility (follow the manufacturer's recommended minimum wattage, supposing that the PSU is not the shittiest no-brand one with made-up numbers; in my book it's good to even go a little overboard as a PSU is something you can have through 2-3 major PC upgrades; a good one will easily last you 8-10 years)
    - CPU - potential bottlenecks - you don't want to pair a high end GPU with a Core i3 or a Ryzen 3; it will work, but the card simply won't show its full potential
    - case space - check the card's dimensions, check whether your case will physically fit the card
2: Nothing too major there to fuck up - release the slot's pin, unscrew the old card from the rear bracket, unhook the power cables (if any), pop in the new card, lock the pin, screw the card's bracket, hook in the power cables to the card. Done.
    3: Can't help you there - it's your money.

    Aaand @kamen was right.

@melezorus34 Still waiting for actual benchmarks. I'm tempted to get a 3080 at release, but also tempted to wait for the 20 GiB version (probably early 2021). The 3090 seems too much in terms of price.
  • 0
@kamen they are released all at once in an hour ago.

And yes 3090 is "only for 3d specialist and professional content creators"

However I'd love to put my excel sheets into that VRAM 😂
