I do however not like main. If this is going to be a thing, master needs to become "senpai", feature branches need to become "kohai," and PRs need to become notices. The emails should therefore read "I hope senpai will notice kohai/feature"

Slave has an obvious meaning, so while I disagree with erasing our vocabulary I can see it being debated. But master has a lot of meanings, and git doesn't have "slave" branches, so quite obviously master here doesn't mean slave-owner.

While we're at word magic, I hate the frenzy around the n-word. The concept that only black people can use it creates a situation where it's a privilege, which is the opposite of what you want if you actually think it's a slur.

@Lor-inc I also understand that the word "cracker" originally referred to Irish descent people who were known to crack jokes. Until an ignorant person co-opted the word for their own racist ends. Yet people are always blaming white people for co-opting everyone else's culture.

The proposed "main" is shorter and all branches are equal in GIT anyways.

This time, the change would actually be trivial because all GIT tools already just work on what is currently checked out and therefore the name of the first branch isn't likely to be hardcoded anywhere outside GIT.
Also the proposed change would only alter the default name on initial branch creation, wich by its very nature can't affect repos wich already contain any commits.

@Oktokolo I'd argue main is generally speaking not a technically accurate term compared to master. Since "main" implies the branch that is primarily (i.e. "this is main branch, you'll be committing to this most of the time"), vs "master" has a more "don't touch this" connotation. But then again, it really depends on the individual repo.

Well, the first branch in a repo actually does attract the most commits over the lifetime of most projects. As that implies that it is the most touched branch at the end, having a "don't touch this" connotation would actually be misleading...
So you are actually arguing in favor of "main" instead of "master".

I’m not necessarily in tech yet but I am around it. The word slave and the n-word are triggering in ways you all could never understand. Shit the word trigger is triggering in itself.
Not at all surprised to see a (presumably) white Guy unnecessarily bring up his thoughts about the n word but again if you haven’t lived a life where people expect subservience out of you due to societal norms and subjects covered in elementary that subtly reinforce those beliefs. Or experience the situations and pure negative energy encompassed in every situation in which a white person weaponizes the nword couldn’t expect you to feel the same. However would hope such smart people would be able to understand and not question our humanity but undermining our emotions.
As for renaming branches I’ve honestly never thought of it and don’t really care as I’m sure many other black people in or around tech feel even being at this point took having tougher skin than that.

What I don't understand is black people making the n-word a privilege rather than a real taboo by using it, and I also think that "master" shouldn't be a trigger word. Because "master" is a term used in context of a hierarchy, and hierarchies are normal. That slave societies happen to be hierarchies shouldn't invalidate this word.

The same ‘privilege’ created by us being able to use the word is like when you call a friend a son of a bitch, motherfucker or some other term that’s normally an insult. If you don’t know the person you’re gonna be taken back, but if you’ve shared some type of life experience i.e. systemic racism and oppression you’ll feel more like it’s a term of endearment due to said experience. Can also still be a slight insult depending on how it’s used...It’s like that except it’s just for black people. I also wish people would stop bringing this up for the sake of it, it is what it is. I would never use the f-word nor question gay people’s disdain for it due to a pretty basic level of respect and compassion.

There are legitimate uses for slave in many other contexts. It describes a relationship between objects and even people (in a positive light even). For instance, Paul describes himself as a slave to Christ. Meaning, Paul did not own himself, Christ owns him. Aesop was also a slave and describes himself as such. Yet he has wisdom beyond what most people ever attain. Yet do we know who owned Aesop? In devices it describes specific relationship. A slave takes instruction or command from a master device. Slave is a completely descriptive word for this relationship.

When I was a kid I didn't understand there was a difference between people's skin color. I picked that garbage up watching TV and movies. If you want lasting change we need to fix that shit first. Like someone said in another thread the biggest perpetrator of racist ideology has been the main stream media and movies.
