If somebody underestimates your job as being a developer ask them if it would be easy for them to solve complex mathematical problems all day. Because that's basically the same mental strain as being a developer.

And I rambled on:
No one can understand other people's lives, we only make presumptions based on what we went through ourselves. If we dislike / don't understand somebody we should blame it on our own lack of experience instead of the person. Because most of the disturbances in society is caused by people not wanting to understand each other after all.

    This is deep!

And mostly true...but to leave it at that assumes that empathy is merely a concept and not something that we as humans can truly experience.

@Treighton I didn't want to ramble on too much so I didn't enter subjects like dehumanization of strangers and contamination(? I don't know the exact english name of it) syndrome. Which most of the time affects how we (or if we) emphasize with others. I didn't wanted to write too much about social and psychological elements too much because I didn't want to further away too much from Devrant's theme. Also I'm really not an expert on these subjects so please do excuse the things I left out and things I am not fully knowledgeable with. But I do recommend researching on this topic more
