When people think we are IT

Where do you draw the line between programming and "IT"?

The people who install operating systems, fix computers, install networks, install hardware

system.DrawLine(); //right here

Develop software,
Manage code
Fixing bugs
Spends countless hours doing magical logic maths and stuff.

But you can do all the things above the line right?

So I guess then you don't deal with data?
Because software development and engineering are IT jobs.

A degree in IT is a big difference than a degree in software engineering.

Software engineering is part of information technology like it or not.
Just like dentist and brain surgeon are medical care.
Pilot and mehanic are both aviation{jobs} and so on.

Yes. Okay programming falls under the category of Information technology. But the term IT when referring to a profession refers to an "IT technician". And it was understandable what was meant when I said "when people assume we're IT". The software engineers are in a different section than the IT department in a company.

@JimmyJumpdrive but would you let an IT guy touch your box?

I mean, if the company is forcing us to use specific software, chances are, I'd rather have the IT guy just install windows for me and walk away.

If I have full liberty over my machine, no.

But, the convince of an IT technician setting a system on a companys network is there, for something like that... yes.

It really depends on the task on hand.
Can I connect a machine to a network? Yes.

Can the guy who connects the machines to a network all day and gets paid to do so do it faster than me? Probably, its what an it tech is for.

I agree, same realm but different buckets. There's a lot of crossover, but IT Admins generally don't know much past PowerShell/Bash and Devs don't know all the OS internals. Granted, they/we could if given time and coffee.
