All you're doing is stroking your own ego.

It's more of a obsession to complete the incomplete or to correct the incorrect just for the sake of it.
Not necessarily an ego trip

@gnaaah the ego is thy self.
If they're obsessively compelled to do it and it they like doing it then they're in an ego trip.
If they're self aware and these characteristics are not inline with their own self image then it is a personality disorder.
Otherwise they're just ignorant or missing the joke.

I would say the purpose of telling a joke is to show off your sense of humor. Ie. stroking your ego
