I need new mobile hardware because my old netbook from 2010 just doesn't cut it anymore.

AMD 4700U (TDP 15 W), iGPU only, 2x16 GB 3200 RAM, 2 TB Evo 860. Delivery in November because APU-only laptops are totally hot RN.

Maybe I can install Mint on that if I go for a 5.8 mainline kernel. At least it has Intel wifi, not Broadcom.

Why the 5.8 kernel... (curious as very explicit)

Ubuntu is on 5.4 I think. And afaik Tuxedo supports Ubuntu, too.

Am I missing something?

Specs seem fine, only concern would be build quality.

Seems like a nice device, specs wise. Personally I have been looking for 14", but I am intrigued. 860€ (with 32GB RAM, without SSD, so depending on your storage needs ca 1000-1100€ total) is not that bad and I really like the configuration options for keyboard layout and such.

@IntrusionCM Because 5.4 doesn't work with 4xxx integrated graphics, but I've read reports that 5.8 is fine. Maybe even 5.6, but 5.4 will use SW rendering.

@saucyatom Is the difference in ease of transport really that much between 14 and 15.6?

@Fast-Nop I was just contemplating whether my memory served me right, but then yes, that's why I decided do not go for a Ryzen this year and get something more temporary but well supported for now (i5-9500T) and maybe get a proper laptop next year. (Another reason was poor availability a fee months ago.)

@saucyatom Availability is still an issue because most ODMs failed to grasp the point of an APU and pair it with a dGPU. Those with iGPU only are sold out quickly.

However, the kernel issue will be sorting out itself, given that it does run nicely with newer mainline kernels. It's just that LTS distros will have to catch up. Which of course isn't an issue with RR distros.

@Fast-Nop I really don't know but I'll have to take some short distance flights with only hand luggage, so I want to try 14". Anything smaller probably is too small to use it individually, but I'll have it docked 99% of the time, so portability is more important than a bigger screen. If you plan to use it solo more often, 15(.6)" might be better, so ymmv.

@saucyatom Yeah, I don't have a docking station because I also have a desktop computer. So the laptop will only be used as standalone.

@saucyatom Well I'll just slap in the mainline kernel PPA from Ubuntu until the LTS kernel gets bumped. That's only a temporary workaround.

@Fast-Nop Yeah makes sense to uograde, LLVM pipe sucks. But 5.8 is sweet release.

Just glanced over the changes, from 5.4 to 5.8… lot of PowerPlay / Power management fixes. And the GPU hw recovery.

@IntrusionCM For my desktop, 5.4 works fine - but that's the 3400G. Maybe I'll upgrade to a 4700G after they'll have become available as used parts.
