Matlab is the best (or at least a decent) place to make mistakes fast for math and complex algorithm testing :) especially for images

Really? I didn't know it also had image processing. It is a workhorse of technical academia so I shouldn't be surprised. I guess most actions can be done in Python or other languages?

Yes Python also has great resources for similar things, Matlab I believe has more resources available, some of which are easier to use and require no code for testing out ideas (think more machine learning, deep learning and others)
