@rooter well it really doesn't matter, but it's just that it's so much more than "IT", it's like saying "oh so you make houses" to an architect. Yes, in the end it's just a house but an architect is very different from a bricklayer.
You're right, it's ego, but ego isn't necessarily bad. Too much of it is obviously bad, but if you have too little you'll feel you're not worth anything. -

@ConfusedDeputy yeah most of the time I try to explain it in very simple terms and they get it (I think they do at least), but that's not the point. The point is that most people don't know what we do and just think we fix printers, which doesn't really matter but is kinda annoying.

@iiii it's not, but people use the term IT as anything related to computers.
When people (mostly girls) ask me what I study in college and immediately answer themselves with "oh it's IT or something like that, right?" a part of me just dies. They literally think I'm studying how to work at help desk or fix printers. I'm not even exaggerating, a girl once told me she actually thought that. I'm not sure if she's just dumb as fuck or if most people actually think that about computer science, hopefully it's the former...
